China At War

  • War with China tied up most of Japan resources throughout the war. This contributed greatly to success of US Pacific campaign. And also ruled out any ambitious propositions like say invasion of Australia.

This is probably one of your best series. A topic that is very undercovered combined with your excellent quality makes for an award-winning combination.
  • @ScorpoYT
The Japanese attempt to defeat china remind me of how moustache guy and napoleon thought they would have defeated Russia if they captured Moscow.
  • @Dylan-lw1xc
Crazy how the casualties of the first Sino-Japanese war were 30k but the second war caused over 30,000,000.
  • Fun Fact---A group of Elite Chinese Soldiers (trained by the Germans) stayed behind in Shanghai and resisted the Japanese for so long and thus turning Shanghai into the Stalingrad of China. They caused the Japanese so much trouble. These soldiers were forced into the international section of the city where they would be interred for a longtime. Their commanding officer would refuse to support the Chinese collaborators and would be assassinated for it. Shame what happened to these guys. My compliments to all those who made this video a reality.

I hope you guys continue to talk about Japan’s war effort in China. Too often, only 1937 - 1938 is talked about and as soon as the US enters the war, the whole front in China gets dropped from conversation. It comes up again during Operation Ichi-Go but that’s so late into the war and while very bloody, is ultimately inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. Edit: “Inconsequential” was poor word choice on my part so I apologize. My point still stands in that China took so much of Japan’s war power, but a lot of the conversation in media is about the US island campaign. That’s why I was disappointed with Hardcore History’s Pacific War series. Side note, the episode for this topic on the podcast was fantastic and went into more detail. Hopefully this series continues to talk about what happened in China up until 1945. Honestly, the only western source I can remember talking about it in detail is Rana Mitter’s book Forgotten Ally. I know there are more but I can’t recall off the top of my head.
  • Ah my favorite part of the Prelude Episodes ;)! So much history to shove into one episode! The Second Sino-Japanese War is such an overlooked part of the entire story and its amazing to see such a beautifully made video on it =)
  • @deinekes9
I don't know if this is the first professional western produced retelling of the 2nd Sino Japanese war, but it is leaps and bounds beyond the others. It's almost like what Soviet Storm did for the Eastern Front.
  • @punanchnay
An often overlooked fact is that Japan considered attacking the Soviet Union during Barbarossa. One main reason it decided to move south was due to the large number of troops tied up in China. In hindsight, that could have been one of the most critical moves for the Axis to win the war.

I'm glad to say that this series is probably your best work so far. I'm just hooked (and the Pacific War - Week by Week companion podcast you guys created is even better, with even more information ♥️🔥😎). Excellent job 🤝🏼

Japanese: Hey, we defeated your army. Accept our demands! Chinese: Nah, we have more than enough people to fight against you Japanese: Ok, We conquered Shanghai, Nanking and defeated your army, again, including your elite soldiers. Accept our terms and surrender Chinese: That thing? Nah, we have another capital already, here, have some river water Japanese: Ok, we landed in South China, defeated you yet again, cut you off from foreign aid and conquered another one of your capitals, please surrender. Chinese: Guess who has new capital? Japanese: Omfg!

Most channels would begin a documentary on the Pacific War at 1941, sometimes 1939, and maybe MAYBE at 1937. The earliest you would see it start is 1931. You guys began your documentary all the way back at 1471, worked your way through 400 years of European colonialism, and then began the documentary in earnest from 1851. This is history done right.
  • @beleg1437
I strongly recommend anyone interested in this video reading 'The Rape of Nanking'. What the Japanese did in Nanking is, and shouldn't be, overshadowed by German atrocities in Europe.
  • @gaberobison680
As a HOI4 player, I appreciate the use of National focus icons and finally learning why Menchukuo/Mengjiang exists since English literature on separation isn’t movements from Qing China are sparse!
  • @iKvetch558
This has been a great series...and this is stuff that has not been covered by other channels in this kind of detail. Thank you for this and all your other great works. 💯✌
  • But throughout that waring between the two parties they revered only one man Sun Yat Sen
  • @Mr_M_History
Thankyou for making such great vids on a criminally undercovered topic. Keep up the amazing work!
