Trying DIY wild Irish sea moss gel to define 4c coils for a wash and go.

I have 4c hair and sometimes itā€™s difficult to define my coils without using up sixty percent of a jar of hair gel in one wash. In fact, Iā€™ve never achieved total definition without spending a ton of money on hair products.

I wanted to try a DIY Irish Sea Moss gel to see if I could cut costs on all of the expensive natural hair products I buy.

Recipe:
1 cup sea moss
Cover sea moss in distilled water and let sit for at least 8 hours.
Drain water and rinse sea moss.
Put softened sea moss in a heat safe pot or bowl and cover with distilled water.
Heat until sea moss melts.
Add 1/2 cup water and desired amount of oil to sea moss.
Blend.
Strain if needed.
Check PH balance and add preservative after it cools.
Put in applicator bottle.

Soooooo....Iā€™m low key hoping Whitney sees this video and gives ya girl a helping hand šŸ¤£. I love her videos! We both started around the same time (when I had my old Toyaboo channel ) and Iā€™ve watched and supported her for years.

I'm not a DIY kind of person at all, but I am HERE for proper use of preservatives in DIY products. šŸ‘ šŸ‘šŸ‘ Look at that scale! That pH testing!! WE STAN!!!
  • @jardy348
Ok hear me out...I think with botanical gels, less is more - and Iā€™m not just talking about the actual gel but with the layers added to it. Oils, creams and butters donā€™t play nice with them and possibly are barriers to the botanical gel...preventing them from forming a real cast on the hair strand and resulting in them flaking right off when it dries. Try applying the gel directly onto your hair after you have rinsed out your conditioner/deep conditioner and see how it reacts. And of course apply to soaking wet hair (like you did) and work in before adding more. I bet you your hair will stay defined and flake freešŸ˜‰. Part 2 please! We are rooting for the sea moss wash and go win!

This is entirely too much for me to do. Youā€™re out here being a whole scientist! But I love to watch you create. šŸ˜…

Plant gels are very temperamental! So soaking wet hair, and not as heavy handed application is the key. The aloe gel probably wasnā€™t happy during the mix. plus the extra sea moss you used in the beginning, also probably made it too concentrated! Iā€™d definitely try it, but with a different leave in, and test it out

I require a part 2 lol. For the culture šŸ˜†
  • Donā€™t need to heat it up. Wash out with lime real good. swell in water then blend with purified water in a really good blender. For hair, skin and to digest. No need for preservatives it can last in the fridge for 1 month, 3 months frozen.

I don't make mine like Whitney. I love her, but I like using my expensive moss for as many things as possible. It's great for skin, hair, and for internal us, so skip the oil. Black bits are often on the moss itself. Clean the moss thoroughly before soaking and remove undesired black bits then. Then place it in a large bowl of distilled water with a few lime halves overnight, covered. Drain and save the water. I freeze it in ice cube trays and use as a facial toner and hair mist. I don't cook my moss. I don't see the need and some vitamins don't survive heat well. After soaking it's plenty soft. I put it in a blender (I use a nutribullet) with about a cup of distilled water if I have a full large bullet and blend. Refrigerate the mixture and it gells just fine. I freeze these too and defrost one or two at a time to apl9to the ends of my twists and braids for hold or pop a frozen one into a smoothie for a nutritional boost. Keeps defrosted for about 2 weeks.

ā€œRemember those black bits....letā€™s get rid of themā€ šŸ˜‚ yup def didnā€™t sound right
  • @apara2005
As a chemist I approve of your preservative and the way you added it. Made my little heart smile soo much to see this perfectly done (I'm such a nerd...lol šŸ¤“). For the people who may buy that preservative.... As long as the system is under 5.5 you are good to go :).
  • @Karlabrew
I love the results!!! It looks amazing. I think is itā€™s definitely worth perfecting
  • @Sundoom92
Thanks for being so transparent and sharing your experience. I enjoyed following & observing the whole process!
  • Your hair turned out so defined!šŸ˜ Would definitely love to see how it turns out with a few tweaks
  • @Alfruna
You should try it out without the leave-in and Aloe gel. I've noticed that these DIY plant based gels also work great keeping moisture in the hair. There is really no need to layer as many products.
  • @johnarhodes3748
Iā€™m glad you share successes and struggles when trying new products. Your hair looked beautiful. Please share part 2. I would like to see the results.
  • @beeblack4191
Definitely part 2 Please!!! Despite the flaking, your hair came out beautifully. I think using less sea moss might helpšŸ¤žšŸ¾
  • Thank you for trying it! And yes to the preservatives. There are so many new nature based ones that there isn't a reason to not use it anymore.
