Pokémon rivals have been a thing since generation 1 of Pokémon, and today I will be ranking them on a tier list to decide who the greatest rivals were.

Yk it’s funny May’s dialogue is more than Brandon’s so technically there’s a reason she has more character. She’s programmed to speak much more lmao
  • @atcraft1070
I love how Hau and Gladion are polar opposites, yet work together so well, like a good cop bad cop.
  • @Hydraina
Bede is simultaneously an edgy 14 year old boy, and a grandma. I will always be in awe of how the designers managed to pull that off and execute it in a character. I love him

One little thing about Hop. He didn't really gave up about Pokémon Battles. He just realised that he doesn't have to be like his brother Lion to be recognised to be as strong as him. But you can still battle him at the Pokémon League and the Galarian Star Tournament on the DLCs, so he still enjoys battling, and maybe he's able to balance Pokémon Battles and investigation, as other Gym Leaders do with Pokémon Battles and their jobs.
  • As a pokemon shield player, let me tell you a bit about Avery. He is like Klara, he is jealous of you and is willing to cheat to win. The differences between those 2 is that Avery isn’t as toxic as Klara, but still a jerk towards you. It’s obvious that Avery specializes in psychic types. Avery does move puns (example: “My Future Sight must be off!”), and Avery didn’t photoshop his league card

My hot take: Hop is the best character in sword and shield excluding dlcs. In this dry ass story of gen 8, Hop's story that he will always be a Leon's shadow is well-written and emotional
  • I feel like you just never read Brendan’s dialogue, and just kind of assumed he was just “boy May” since the other alternate gender rivals from the other Gens aren’t that much different from each other. Gen 3 was the only Gen that actually tried giving different personalities for whatever gender character you didn’t pic that became your rival. While May does give “girl next door” vibes and is generally pretty friendly around you, Brendan is a bit of a… (I don’t mean this in a “Twitter”-sounding way)… sexist? And that’s not a bad thing, it’s a character trait he learns and grows from the more you beat him. Most of his dialogue is the same as May’s, just reworded to come off more boyish, but he also makes jabs at you for being a girl and comes off as cocky, like he knows better and has to be the one to show you the ropes. I guess it can be interpreted as him being more teasing than mean, since he does respect you and congratulate you for becoming Champion by the end, but May didn’t have any of those jabs, so that stands out to me. Heck, here are a couple of his quotes: “Moved in next door, right? I didn't know that you're a girl. Dad, Prof. Birch, said that our new next-door neighbor is a Gym Leader's kid, so I assumed you'd be a guy.” “As for me… I'm considering challenging Norman, the Gym Leader of Petalburg. Unlike you, , your dad looks like he really is tough.” “Oh, what's the matter? Don't have any confidence in your Pokémon?” “I went out all over Hoenn and checked out Pokémon. You can thank me for getting the National Mode Pokédex. Yep, you're lucky, !” (May’s dialogue is more humble and says “Eheheh! It's so cool that even my Pokédex is getting updated! It's because you went out and caught so many Pokémon, !”) In ORAS this is toned down and he’s much nicer. His dialogue is reworded so he “hoped his new neighbor would be a guy” so it’d be easier to make friends, and now he has a crush on May when he gets flustered asking to take her back to Petalburg after you beat Flannery. He also has a secret thing for Pokémon Dolls too and gets embarrassed when he’s asked about it at Lilycove too, it’s kind of endearing. In the original games, he’s comes off like he’s rolling in his eyes like, “No, I’m not here to buy *dolls.*” Sorry for the long comment, just wanted to make my point since I played as May in the Gen 3 games!

Gen 3 Wally and Gen 6 Wally are different characters in my opinon. In ORAS, after you beat him in Mauville City, he just kinda vanishes. When you take a look at the gym signs from Flannery’s gym onwards, Wally is a certified trainer before you even enter the gym. I see why you dislike Wally but I strongly disagree, at least with Gen 6.

This is way Pokemon Masters is the greatest spin-off ever, as it gives all the main series characters chances to not have the personality of wet cardboard (looking at you, Kalos)
  • @Hamantha
There’s a lot more depth to N and his Pokémon than you give him. He’s embodies “you have to be part of the system to fix/break the system” and he doesn’t keep the Pokémon longer than he needs them, not keeping them longer than necessary so they could be free
  • @Guerteltank
I wish Nemona at one point actually used her champ team instead of what she build up alongside you going up to champ rank. I wonder what she used to get it done before, even though Geeta is the champ so she could probably use an army of sleeping slakoths to beat her
  • @J43RH
5:50 Silver has shoved / punched the main character before so Hugh isn't the only one on this list
  • @chefiguess
"Gladion's a well written character," Gladion ran from his abusive mother to join a gang LED BY HIS ABUSIVE MOTHER
  • It’s a hot take but I prefer the more friendly rival like Serena and Nemona. Ones who will put me up other then put me down.
  • What’s funny is that Trever is one of the only rivals who actually mastered mega evolution which is super cool
  • @gauge19021
hop was one of my favorite rivals from across the games. I loved his story about him getting over what bede said to him and eventually coming to the conclusion that battling wasn't for him and switching paths to become a pokemon researcher at the end. I might be biased because sw/sh were my first pokemon games that I could fully understand (since I wasn't 3 at the time of playing them) but I just wanted to spread some hop positivity.
  • @Wither64
“GO SEE A DOCTOR” i’m convinced he will make me laugh, every upload
  • @BluePhoenix_
About N, except for the final takeover he only ever uses pokemon that you can catch, where you fight him and releases them after. He essentially only catches these Pokemon to test the person he sees as his hero counterpart. And i will put the thing about tram Plasma like this: They had to use the stones to destroy the stones.
