Late Roman Empire kinda sounds like present U.S.A. .

Am i supposed to be sleeping? Yes. Am I going to stay up for an hour to watch this? Yes…
  • “Cause all I hear is threats from a brute with no discipline, and I’m ruling over you like a boot full of my citizens!” Julius Caesar

Take a shot for every time someone compares late Rome to America
  • Rome did not burn Carthage to the ground Rome dismantled Carthage Brick by brick

Lesson of the Roman Republic- having an extensive foreign empire isn’t good for a representative government at home.
  • Powerful quote that is alleged to be spoken by a weeping Scipio Aemilianus, while watching the destruction of the city of Carthage - “A glorious moment, Polybiius; but I have a dread foreboding that some day the same doom will be pronounced on my own country.” How true that was 😢
  • What surprised me the most was the complete absence of Marcus Aurelius.

Appreciate you doing a video that doesnt involve modern politics and seems incentivised, please keep staying neutral and open to all kinds of topics!

Dangit! Now I'm thinking about the Roman Empire. The one thing I actively try to avoid doing.

It was mostly the consistent civil wars to determine who the next emperor would be, instead of having the senate vote on the previous emperors choice and making it illegal for a general to take the throne by force! The split on the empire and moving the capital to a different city did not help with unity and keeping Rome, well Roman. So when the west fell the east allowed the west to defend its self. With out the ewsr, the eastern empire became something different that really wasn’t Roman anymore. There were also religious changes with Christianity taking power over Hellenism making everyone basically convert causing even further turmoil and loss of self. The barbarians did finish off the empire, but some actually ran the empire through puppets at the end, but they tried to run it themselves and well they weren’t capable so the moire split and smaller kingdoms formed that didnt even last long.

There have been moments in which I wondered if the Roman Empire perhaps, just segued into being the Roman Catholic Church. Powerful worldwide.
  • A little over half way through, I couldn't stop thinking, "my name is mud" 😂

1 hour about Rome and didnt even mention the first ever recorded big moneyprinting with the devaluation of the Denarius, beginning after Cäsars death....
  • The entire Gibbon, condensed and animated. This is much easier than reading the entire uncut Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Where were you when I was tempted into reading the thing?
  • A very very condensed version but done very well. Alot of history to squeeze in just one hour. It get better when you learn about all of the Roman history in detail.
