I love that question by the end "Who's the bad guy here?!" Depending on what the story wants, anyone can have their time in the spotlight. The main protagonists may be antagonistic, previous antagonists become protagonists, there's a sort of revolving perspective that just makes it feel like you're tagging along with everyone's everyday lives in this series, regardless of how many pointless fights they start Edit: The creator of the series, ZUN, has been open about his distaste of having the series be adapted into a full-on anime. When he was writing one of the official manga, he intentionally made the pacing be spread across multiple different lines of books because his publisher wanted to adapt it into an anime

To be clear, each of the songs for the openings are covers from the original games' BGM. And each cover were made by a group called Yuuhei Satellite, with the vocalist in particular being Senya. The first opening is a cover for "The Gensokyo the Gods Loved", the Stage 3 BGM from Touhou 10. This theme in particular is joked about as Touhou's national anthem by the fans, or is often used as the theme for the land of Gensokyo as a whole. The second is a cover of "Last Remote", the Extra Stage theme from Touhou 11. An honestly beautiful piece that is loved by the fans. Third is "Fate of Sixty Years", the theme of Shikieiki from Touhou 9. She's the green haired girl shown everywhere in the opening, and is the final boss for this particular game. And finally, the last cover is from "Extend Ash ~ Hourai Victim", the Extra Stage theme from Touhou 8. Another solid theme, with heavy ties to the phoenix girl you pointed out before. Each theme is iconic to the series, by some form or another, and I highly recommend listening to either them or covers of them during your spare time.

Possibly my favorite animations of Touhou are by an animator named Minus T, his animations are an absolute blast to watch! Hope one day you react to one of them.

This fanmade anime also has an ending per episode (it's at 18 episodes so far). You may be particularly interested in checking out the 果てなき風の軌跡さえ (Even the Endless Wind's Trajectory) PV. The song for it is the 14th ED of this anime, but the visuals of the PV are different from the ones in the anime and are much more interesting. There's even an Itano circus. 今回みたアニメ確かに東方好きが集まって作ったものなんですが素人が作ったというよりはその道についての知識が豊富な方が作ってるからクォリティが高いんですよね。 しかも今回聴いた曲を歌っている人は別の名義でも活動している歌手なのでクオリティが高くなるんですよね。 あと今回聴いたぜひ4曲フルでも聴いてほしいです。

4曲目の「花鳥風月」、 歌詞が本当に良くて聴くたびに涙が出てきます…

So, from memory. The first opening is an arrange/cover of "The Gensokyo the Gods loved" from Touhou 10. The 2nd one is "Last Remote" from Touhou 11. 3rd one is "Fate of Sixty Years" from Touhou 9 (the final boss's theme, that shortie that lectured the sleepy one on the spider lily valley) 4th one is "Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke", the theme of Fujiwara no Mokou (The Phoenix) from Touhou 8. . But yes, they're covers made for the anime. Now to solve random questions. "Why are they fighting each other?" simply put, because Touhou. They play-fight for anything really, but there's Incidents that do require some beating (like that one with an arm cannon who was going to destroy the world with her newfound powers) "spider lilies? it's like death right?" yeah, the sleepy one (Komachi) is a shinigami (God of Death) and the ferrywoman that carries the souls to the afterlife where Shikieiki Yamaxanadu (the shortie, who's a Yama, those who judge where souls go when they die) Judges them and decides their fate (Hell, Heaven, Underworld, etc), so yeah, Komachi is basically an underling of Shikieiki, the scolding happening because Komachi slacked off and souls accumulated, manifesting as the spider lilies. "Who's the good guy?" You'd always want to root with Reimu's side (the protagonist), also there's barely any encounters where there's an "evil", they just beat each other up because of conflicting ideas or wanting to stop someone from doing something dumb. There's like less than 5 touhou characters that are strictly evil (Seiga Kaku, a necromancer and wicked hermit. Seija Kijin, who's more of a troublemaker than strictly evil, because she is all about being opposite to all really. Parsee Mizuhashi, this one is controversial because she doesn't actively seek out evil either, but she's always against anyone that approaches her because of her infinite jealousy (she has the ability to manipulate jealousness, but it also made her be jealous of all and thus is never really happy (poor her)) And maybe some others who I might not remember rn, there aren't many considering the total amount of characters there are surpasses the hundreds) Anyways that's about it because it got long enough and probably because of that no one is going to read this 😅

There are 2 other notable Touhou fan anime I'd like to mention: Touhou Musou Kakyou ~ A Summer Day's Dream and Touhou Hifuu Katsudou Kiroku ~ The Sealed Esoteric History (my personal favorite). In my opinion, they're even more impressive than Memories of Phantasm, considering the fact they both have professional voice acting (with some famous VAs) and fantastic animation (not the first episodes though, you can clearly see how the animation improves episode by episode). I absolutely love the song used for the opening of The Sealed Esoteric History (Ketsubetsu no Tabi), it remixes 3 amazing Touhou themes together (Girl's Sealing Club, Innocent Treasures, and Necrofantasia).

As a long time Touhou enjoyer it's good to see new people expose to this rabbithole. So the thing about Touhou is that the original game is consider itself a original "doujin game" where ZUN, the main Touhou dev, sell it at comiket (a doujin market convention). That make it kinda more "with the mass" than normal game release and it generate fan from different doujin circle. With how simple but interesting character and story and also a banger ost not to mention that ZUN himself know the mindset of doujin creator so the IP it's is initialy not copyright (have to do it later since unrelate party try to make the name their own) that make it more safe to create doujin work of it and it's kind snowballed now Touhou even have their own comiket called Reisaitai. On unrelated note would you interest in reaction to music from arknights? If so I would you to see your reaction to 'Arknights EP - Radiant' since it's good entry point for this another rabbit hole lol

Too bad your not watching the Anime itself, luckily they aren't that long, but these songs are a big part of my life. I have them on all my playlists. And yes fan made projects for Touhou are absolutely insane. I might continually edit this comment. The openings and the anime themselves are loosely based on the plot of the games Touhou 6 on. 1st being 6 and some of 7 2nd being 11 and some of 10 3rd being mostly 9 story with some of 8 4rth being 8
