Class A Motorhome Steering Tire Blowout... Here's What Happened

We interrupt our travel videos to share our most recent RV life challenge with you. As we were getting back into Texas this year, the sidewall blew out on our passenger side front steer tire!

We've all seen the videos of Class A motorhomes cruising down the highway when the unthinkable happens... a front steer tire blows out! Usually the video shows the motorhome losing control, veering off of the road and sometimes flipping. At the very least, there is often significant damage. Like other RVers, a front tire failure has always been one of our biggest fears. Until now.

In this video, we share what happened, how much damage we had, and what it took to get back on the road.

We have now completed the trifecta of most feared events for RVers...
Our motorhome broke down in the middle of nowhere in 2019:    • Full-Time RV Nightmares: 2 Breakdowns...
Our motorhome was in an accident in 2021:    • Our Motorhome Got Hit! Now What? | Re...
And now our motorhome has had a tire blow out! In each of these cases, we were extremely lucky.

🤠 Thanks For Watching!

We are Tom and Stacie Langland, known for 10 years as RV Texas Y'all.

We are Native Texans and Full-Time RVers who are all about exploring the Great State of Texas and America one campground at a time. We're on a mission to experience life, not just live it and we're bringing you along for the fun.

In 2018, we sold our house, our business and gave away just about everything we own to hit the road and see America. Our home is a 33' motorhome named Freedom. We installed an extreme solar and lithium battery setup so now we can camp just about anywhere with our dog (Star) and our cat (Astro).

Every day is a new adventure, so join us as we RV America Y'all.

Safe Travels and Happy Camping!

I'm glad that the 4 of you are ok. Several people at NIRVC Dallas had a hand in the development of Retrobands. Obviously their hard work payed off. The chassis shop at NIRVC Dallas is also to be commended for taking care of you. I bvb had the pleasure of getting to work with y'all when I worked there and continue to enjoy and learn from your videos.

This is my biggest fear. Having a blowout on a steer tire causes me a lot of anxiety. I’m sincerely glad you are ok.
  • Even though we never want this to happen, it seems you guys were in the perfect place for it to happen.
  • I’m so glad y’all are ok! Nice tires, I hope you get that resolved. I’m in Galveston! ❤ I now see that Lone Star Tire treated you right! What a blessing that that retroband held and nothing was damaged. Whew! Every RVers nightmare.
  • I am so glad you guys are okay. This must be national tire blowout week. We live in southern Florida and were leaving town for hurricane Nichole. We went North and turned onto I-10 west. We had the cruise control set to 67 mph. The winds from Nichole were pushing us around a bit, but at least the rains hadn't started yet. This 18 wheeler pulled up beside us and tooted his horn to get my attention. I looked over and he made a circling motion with his hand. I had no idea what was up, but figured I should pull over and take a look at everything. The passenger side looked good along with the car. I went around to the driver's side. The car looked good. I was starting to wonder why he had tooted at me and made the circle motion with his hand. Then I saw the rear tires on the RV. We have tandom rear axles. The front tire had blown out. We were only 2 miles to the next exit so we drove on. Right off the exit I could see a Truck Stop of America with a tire shop. We wheeled in. The salesman assured me they had a new tire in stock and he would have a mechanic change the tire right now. We had to unhook the car and back the RV up to Bay 5. After doing that we discovered they didn't have our tire in stock. They recommended another tire store 4 miles away in town. We called them and they said if he ordered the tire in the next 3 minutes it would be in today at 1 pm. We said do it and drove over to their shop. 1 pm turned into 3 pm. By this time Nichole was just arriving. There was heavy winds and pouring down rain. Their end bay had a roof, but open sides. Even with the roof the wind blew the rain in on us. This guy was amazing! He changed the tire without removing the rim from the RV. Fortunately like you we didn't have any damage to the RV. He checked the air in all the tires. Sadly they were all low except for one. He aired us up and we paid the bill. By the time we got the car hooked up it was dark out. Nichole was still with us bringing heavy rain and winds. We called around and there was a campground only 3 miles away with an open spot. We pulled in and I hooked up power and water. It was raining too hard for anything else. I even left the car hooked up. The next morning we woke up to find we had a beautiful view of a lake out our front window. God is good! 🤗 Now we are on our way home. We are staying in the Villages at Wildwood for two nights before going home.
  • I am so happy for your setup with the retrobands. You were in the exact right spot for safety and repair. We had blowouts on our 5th wheel. We had tire monitoring, but it didn't matter because the tire blew at the same moment the alarm went off. We were on I 25 in Santa Fe. The rubber from the tire wrapped around the axle. Hubby did manage to get it off, but we thought we were going to need some type of strong saw or grinder to cut the steel bands. He used a pry bar and finally get it off. The tires had very few miles and were less than 18 months old. God bless you and keep rolling.
  • Glad you guys are ok! And you were Texas. Got to remember that Retrobands! Glad you had them. Welcome home!!
  • RVTY thx for an informative video of a life saving product, glad to see Y'all were able to keep on trucking without injury or damage to your beautiful rig. Happy Camping and stay healthy.

Welcome home y’all. Glad your safe after the blow-out, and lucky it didn’t go totally flat so you could get to your campground! Love RV Cat. 😻

Informative video and, most importantly, one with a positive outcome. Glad y'all are back on the road safely. Looking forward to your Caprock Canyons video. Thank you, RV Texas Y'all.
  • Thank you for sharing your experience with Retrobands. So important to all who are involved with RVing and may not consider how important certain investments can be. Very informative and interesting, but more importantly, glad you are ok and no damage was sustained to your rig. Wishing you many more miles of smiles and smooth sailing in the adventures ahead!😊
  • We've never heard of the Retrobands before. They sound amazing, glad you guys are safe.
  • @AmericanMX
Hey guys. Glad you had the retro bands. This is why we recently purchased retro bands for our coach. Glad your back in TX. Wish we knew you were in town we would of stopped by for a visit. Hopefully Michelins warranty covered the tire.
  • Welcome back to Texas. The purchase of the Retrobands for your new coach has really paid off. Your safety is the most important thing. Thanks for this informative video.
  • Wow! First of all, glad you guys are ok. And thanks for sharing. Never heard of retrobands before so we appreciate the info. There's no doubt a front wheel blowout is one of our greatest fears. We're currently in Texas as well, so here's hoping to meet you guys one day. Love the channel! Stay safe.
