1. Neo isn't used to fight enemies shorter than herself. 2. Neo's main strategy is to use the flow of fight against her opponents. 3. Maria's Pre-Reflexes allows her to "see" Neo's movements. 4. Neo is more used to counter, rather than attack. She lets her opponents attack first, and then used against them.

In the end the only reason Maria was losing is the fact that being old she tires quickly, she was superior in any other aspect of the fight, experience above all. If Maria had been younger Neo would've been destroyed so hard that her clash with Yang in Volume 2 would've seem like a close fight.

Neo is basically an offbrand Huntress. Easily able to defeat students and standard soldiers, but completely out of her element against a legend like Raven or Maria.

Neo getting a taste of her own medicine is honestly freaking cathartic at this point.

Well Maria sure did impress me sense she's the only one to land solid hits on Neo while Yang struggled. Hope Volume 9 let's us see more of her character in action.

i also think it has a lot to do with Neo’s fighting style, since her fighting style is developed around fighting bigger and stronger opponents and turning their power and momentum against them. so when she had to fight someone smaller than her she was at a complete loss. also yeah, maria’s the fucking grimm reaper too

Semblances are all well and good, but I am also willing to accept that certain characters are just innately that bad ass.

Well, Neo doesn't use to fight someone shorter than her. Besides, in the novel, is mentioned that being short can be advantageous for Neo, because the opponent can underestimate her. In this case, Neo underestimated Maria.

Someone said that Marias semblance is useless but reflexes actually gives you a huge advantage beacause in a way you can sense the attack and dodge or counter it
