As a Brit, Spain and Portugal have always been the most interesting countries on mainland Europe to me. Their history and culture is so unique and they've always seemed to be doing their own thing, separate from the rest of Europe.

As a Cuban of Spanish descent, I've watched this twice already. Amazing work, friend.

I love that you add that sound effect when a text segment appears on screen. Sometimes I have this on while I do dishes, or other chores, and it alerts me so I know to look instead of just listening! I wish more channels would do that! Thank you!
  • As a person who has spanish blood (mestizo) with parents from Mexico 🇲🇽 and el salvador 🇸🇻 I thank you cause i wanna learn more about my ancestors homeland I even have a aunt who lives in Madrid spain 🇪🇸.
  • The Spanish Empire was not a colonial empire such as the English, French or Dutch, but on the contrary, it was the last empire of the ancient type, closer to what Rome or Greece were. 300-400 years of domain based on miscegenation, alphabetization and conversion of different peoples; construction of universities, cathedrals and cities worldwide; a huge cultural and artistic explotion; deliberation of new phylisophic, teologic and juridic debates in human history (like f.e., if all humans were equal); discoverments that changed the conception of the world; opening of new shipping routes; creation of an undefeated infantry for 2 centuries; expansion of the Hispanic culture throughout the Atlantic and Pacific ocean (called "the spanish lake" at that time) as Rome did throughout the Mediterranean... All of this, in a world as big as the one we know today, but using a technology from 5 centuries ago. From there onward, european empires had a colonial model based on mercantilism, slavery, and large-scale production, creating factories or plantations in overseas possessions, instead of a civilizing reproduction of their society. The former were a global market, the latter a global kingdom. European empires shouldnt be generalized by the fact of having overseas territories, because not all of them were the same.
  • mexico, portugal, Brazil, Abassids, Umayads, china´s dynasties, indonesia, burma... whatever you choose to cover will be cool, just keep doing this

To me is the greatest empire ever. The Roman Empire was to Europe what Spanish was/is to the World. Tell me one world empire that built entire cities with its hospitals, cathedrals, university, castles, palaces,etc...? Even In Manila, Philippines you can feel being part of a Spanish peninsula city in his old town....

Chicano/Mexican here and I have much respect for Spain. It’s amazing to know where our ancestors come from and how their cultures are still prevalent in today’s society. My mom’s fam are from Guadalajara Jalisco on my grandma’s side and Huitzila Zacatecas from my grandpas, heavy Spanish influence without a doubt. That also explains my fluorescent skin color if you saw me haha, soy uno de esos güeros 😂 My pop and his fam are all from Leon Guanajuato mainly of indigenous descent but very much has spanish background coursing through their veins. The ancient Guamare, an offshoot group of the Chichimeca, had an amazing Civilization similar to the Mexica (Aztecs). At the end todos nosotros somos hispanos o latinos. Viva Latinoamérica y España cabrones! 🇪🇸 🇲🇽.

as a spaniard, i love this kind of videos, trying to look at my country from differents points of view and not worring about the politicals undertones that some people try to insert on our history for things still happening today.
  • Spain is the most Amazing country on the planet! They started the Age of Discovery and were the first to give the natives in their Viceroyalties equal rights as any continental Spanish citizen - amazing 🇪🇸👍
  • So happy you made this video! I feel the history of Spain is largely grazed over by most major historical accounts of Europe, despite its immense significance.

Forget about Games of Thrones. The period of Iberian history that goes from the Germanic invasions to the Napoleonic Wars is as intricate and interesting as you can find.

To add a couple of notes : - Before the Iberians, between the 12th century and the 5th century BC, on the south coast of the Iberian Peninsula, at the mouth of the Guadalquivir river existed a Civilization called Tartessos, who where influenced by the Phoenicians and later by the Greek who were stablished in the Eastern Coast of the peninsula. - When the romans first arrived to Spain, apart from the Vacones in the northern part, there were 3 more tribes in the basque territories, in today's Cantabria there where the Cantabri, in today's Asturias there where the Astures who formed the kingdom of Asturias after some centuries, and in today's Galicia. After de Cantabrian wars (29-19 BC), all the tribes of the North, except the vascones, disappeared. - In today's Portugal, there where the Lusitanians, where influenced by the celts like the tribes of the north, and fought against the carthaginians (208-201 BC) and the romans (193 - 139 BC) - When the arabics invaded Spain, the northern part of Spain, except Galicia remained uninvaded
