A New Big Game Gets an Update that Boosts Steam Deck Graphics

Enshrouded is still "unsupported" on Steam Deck, but it just got a performance update and FSR3 - PC Guide

Indie RPG Enshrouded has recently unveiled its much-anticipated Update #3, promising a host of new features and improvements. While the update delivers on many fronts, it’s the performance enhancements specifically tailored for Steam Deck users that have captured our attention. Following these updates, there’s an argument for a Steam Deck ‘Playable’ rating at the very least.

On the surface, the addition of FSR 3.0 and new default settings would suggest a significant performance boost for the handheld out-of-the-box. However, early tests have revealed a less-than-ideal experience. In fact, the game’s performance on the Steam Deck using the developer-recommended settings is downright poor; but this can be remedied if you know what to amend.

There are a few big changes in terms of performance in the Back to the Shroud Update patch notes, particularly aimed at the Steam Deck:

Improved stability and performance on lower hardware specs and on the Steam Deck.

Updated the default settings for the Steam Deck. Please use the “Reset to Default” button to use the updated settings.

FSR3 is now supported and replaces FSR2. You can stop asking now.

However, performance on the new default settings seems to be lackluster, according to Steam Deck HQ. A quick dive into the settings reveals the culprit: point light shadows. This graphical feature, inexplicably enabled by default on Steam Deck, is a major performance knock. Disabling it immediately yields a much smoother experience, allowing players to comfortably hit the 30 FPS target while maintaining a 15W TDP limit. So, the new default settings can’t be recommended at the moment.

It's nice to see Valve caring about the customers unlike Nintendo wasting their time on pirates and mods

I dropped my steam deck and the shoulder buttons stopped working. When I contacted valve and told them what happened they fixed it for free.

even if they remove the easter egg the shipping label says "VALVE and STEAM DECK" lmao I thought that was crazy
  • I bought a steam deck second hand it was an early LCD model with the known right bumper issue where they were prone to failure and well it failed. I didn’t buy it from valve but I I thought I’d shoot my shot and messaged them the full story they replied within the hour saying they will repair for free or replace if they can’t fix and they pre paid the shipping. They really are brilliant

I had a delivery guy hide the steam deck for me because I was not home, also bad neighborhood and he only suggested it 😢 coz he knew what it was he was the best guy ever

I'm a new Steam Deck owner, my box is still on my desk, I didn't knew about the Valve easter egg but seriously, I think the Steam Deck logo next to it is more obvious than the companion cube easter egg... So why the heck people complain about the less obvious icon that show this is a Steam Deck?
  • It's not an Easter egg if it's right there on the box... Also that isn't news, it's been an issue since the Steam Deck first launched.
  • When I ordered mine a few months ago I was terrified of it getting stolen because I’d heard stories.

I've been playing Enshrouded on the Deck, without any reconfigurations or problems. I play docked with a controller and have over 340 hours logged in. They are very responsive to suggestions and active on Discord. I don't notice any frame generation issues, I just enjoy the game. It's in early stages, but it's a great game. I just take my time and I play solo - maybe if playing on a server with others it may not be the same experience.

One of the few advantages of not having official Valve distribution in Latin America is that Steam Decks are not being stolen on transit that much. Thieves prefer to steal phones (specially iPhones) than Steam Decks.

My steam deck is set to be delivered in 2 days and I have now unlocked a new fear 🙃
  • @RedMageGaming
Oh so we wrapped back around to the whole steamdecks getting stolen because the packaging gives away that it's a steam deck. That was a big problem in the beginning too.

Hell divers ran absolutely beautiful. Low lag, using SD's mic, and some earbuds.
  • "Portal Easter egg on the shipping box?" (Grabs cardboard box that's been within arm's reach for two years, even after moving) "Huh, oh yeah, I remember that now. That's cute."

I've been playing Enshrouded exclusively on my Steam Deck since April or May, whenever a friend of mine bought it for me, and it has been running great. This was before the roadmap was published, promising "better Steam Deck support," and I dunno how well it's improved since.

Had mine shipped for pick up at UPS store cause of all the warnings online. 😅
  • United Radio sucks. A week ago, I upgraded my SSD. In January UR fixed my deck, and a couple of screws were missing. Nothing crazy, but I feel comfortable with all the screws.
  • About the steam family: I liked the idea on paper but it's lacking the possibility to be in different families at the same time. Before you could share with 5 people and those 5 people could share with 5 people and so on. But now 5 people can only share within themselves and that doesn't work as well. A friend of mine joined a family and now he can't use the games in my library because I haven't joined that family (I haven't made the switch yet, I like to let this things stew in their own juices for a bit so I can see how they develop, that's why I only recently bought a steam deck oled and I'm rn waiting for it to arrive). And it sucks, even if it's nice that you can play the same game at the same time within the family. They should also let you choose between both modes even if you have tried the new one, which is currently impossible. In my opinion they could get the numbers of people who do that as a metric of how well the new system works, but rn people who switch are stuck with their choice.

I knew that box had something to do with portal. I always looked at the little black and white cube on the front and thought it was a companion cube
