We've probably managed to alienate everyone in the world with this one, but it's just my opinion. Thanks so much to my Patrons for suggesting these coffee candies.

  • One of the best James video genres is "James puts something in his mouth and immediately breaks out in laughter because it's so terrible."
  • @catmansion
I think those Japanese ones in the beginning that you didn't like because they tasted phenolic were actually coffee tea candies (based on the packaging) 珈琲茶飴 - literally "coffee tea candy". Likely, coffee mixed with hōjicha. Personally, I really like the bitter leafy quality of those but I can completely understand why they wouldn't pass the test.

At 13:20 is how I imagine James Hoffman would react if I were to make him a cup of coffee. Surprise, hysterical laughter, raspy "that's so bad", followed by a save of face and somewhat serious "that's not to my taste."
  • @bracco23
The pocket coffee reaction was hilarious! but seriously, the biting was a mistake. I have several times did the old trick of carefully biting one side off just to drink the coffee and then eat the chocolate and doing that you realize that the coffee is way more bitter than it should be and the chocolate is extremely sweet. It is meant to be eaten as a single bite to let both complement each other. try it, even off camera, the experience is way better that way.

    >Throws candy to the ground in a minor fit of pique "That's not to my taste." Always the classic British understatement.
  • @vbence12
I learned 3 things from this video: 1. I want James to make a video about coffee gummies. 2. I have a surprising amount of nostalgia about the "Coffee like" candy (I swear I can taste the texture without having had one in years). 3. I wish more sweets would come in tins and I definitely need to seek out Scho-ka-kola dark
  • There is not much better in the world than seeing James Hoffmann joyously say “that’s so bad!”
  • @timvasbyburnie
When James started the filming, he must have been thinking "Let's give Hames Joffman a LOT of material...." Many great expressions and sound effects all the way through!

As a czech a i have to confess that i have more experience with kofila as a shot then as candy. You take teaspoon of sugar and let it partially dissolve in mouth, then you take a teaspoon (maybe rather half a teaspoon) of ground coffee and small shot of cheap rum. It kinda tastes like kofila, and is usually served at like 2 am

This is the hard-hitting journalism I'm visiting this platform for
  • 15:45 "is anyone a winner here? It's not me." The viewer is the winner James. Because we don't have to eat all of this stuff to get answers. 🤣 Thank you for your sacrific
  • Coffee crisp is my favorite- but yes. It is too sweet and it doesn’t have a fantastic coffee flavor. However, when I eat it - it feels so special it makes me happy.
  • @ondank
"Introduced in Germany in 193X" - is always a dangerous sentence
  • @Deadwelcomer.
I'm sad that the Kopiko cappuccino flavor candy didn't make an appearance. Definitely one of my favorites
  • Here in Canada, Coffee Crisp is pretty divisive. There's not really anyone who thinks it's just okay; you're either a lover or a hater. I think it's delicious, but you're right that the coffee flavor isn't especially strong. But I think that makes it a little more accessible to those who aren't coffee fans, especially kids. I hated coffee as a kid, but this was always one of my favourite candy bars.
  • @100beps
I love pocket coffee so much. More and more, I realise my tastes are literally opposite to any coffee expert lmao
  • @DarkTerrex
Kopiko is so good, I'm so glad I discovered it and will look for it when I can. I have no doubt it was one of the most requested, it's a bit surprising you weren't so into it! I always find it starts a bit bitter then gets a creamy flavor as it goes. I don't enjoy hard candy much but this is one of the few exceptions. Mint is one of my favorite flavors in general, especially in ice cream. I really enjoy it in coffee as well. While you dislike mint in coffee, I dislike cinnamon. I really like cinnamon things but man it just does noooooot work with coffee's flavor.
