In the last days of Atlantis, an elite force called The Twelve was formed to combat the disastrous influence of the Creatures from The Deep. To defeat the Creatures, The Twelve had to extinguish the Underwater Fire, which had called forth the Creatures to begin with.

However, the Dark Atlanteans, working in coordination with the Creatures, had divided the Underwater Fire and scattered it across the planet. Lacking enough time to extinguish each part of the Fire one by one, The Twelve separated into smaller groups in a race to reverse the course of destruction that Atlantis was set on.
