The Großglockner High Alpine Road is one of the most fascinating panoramic roads in Europe. The Grossglockner Road opens up 48 km of fantastically beautiful nature in the Hohe Tauern National Park. We have been here in September 2021. Located between the popular holiday resorts of Zell am See in Salzburg and Heiligenblut in Carinthia, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road offers incomparable natural spectacles.

The highlight is the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, with a fantastic view of the king of the Alps-the Großglockner. On the viewing platform in front of the visitor center it is difficult to take your eyes off the beautiful mountain scenery. If you look down, Austria's largest glacier lies in front of you: the Pasterze.

With 36 hairpin bends, the pass road leads deep into the heart of Austria's largest national park. The Hohe Tauern National Park covers an area of 1800 km² in the federal states of Carinthia, Tyrol and Salzburg.

The Großglocknerstraße is one of the most popular destinations in Austria. Almost 1 million visitors a year admire the beauty of nature on their journey.

Our journey over the Grossglockner High Alpine Road 2021

We drive into Großglocknerstraße via the Heiligenblut ticket office.
The stations

Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe

When entering via the village of Heiligenblut, the highlight of the high alpine road is already reached after 12 km: the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe at 2369 m above sea level offers incredible views of the Großglockner, the Johannisberg and the surrounding mountain giants. In 1856, Habsburg Emperor Franz Josef and his companions marveled at the beautiful view of the Grossglockner and the Pasterze glacier tongue.

The marmots

When you visit, don't miss the marmots. Tame marmots can be fed here and sometimes even stroked. The secret stars on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road are without a doubt the marmots.

Hochtor pass at 2504 m

The next high point is reached at the Hochtor. At the apex of the Großglockner High Alpine Road we are at 2504 m above sea level and admire the unbelievable view. It continues via the tunnel from Carinthia to Salzburg.

Tauern windows and Fuscher Lacke

We drive past the Tauern window to the Fuscher Lacke at 2262 m. Here is a picturesque mountain lake and the well-known Mankeiwirt. He became known for his tame marmot Murmi, who liked to sit on his shoulder and greet the guests.

Fuscher Torl

The next highlight awaits us at the Fuscher Törl. Here the view of the Großglockner and the high mountain landscape is particularly spectacular. Numerous glaciers can be seen from here. The Holzmeister memorial stands on the Fuscher Törl, commemorating the victims of the construction of the Grossglockner Road.

Edelweißspitze with observation tower

Our journey continues to the Edelweißspitze. The 1.6 km long Edelweißstraße branches off from the Großglockner High Alpine Road and leads with a further 177 meters up to the Edelweißspitze. The observation tower on the Edelweißspitze offers a 360° panoramic view that we will never forget.

House Alpine Nature Show

The journey takes us further from the Edelweißspitze to the Haus Alpine Naturschau. Here we admire the avenue of stones. The magnificent view of the Great Wiesbachhorn and the "Salzburg Panorama" won't let us go.

Adventure World Hochmais

We continue on the high alpine road to the Hochmais information point at 1850 m above sea level. A spectacular view of six glaciers, the witch's kitchen and the valley of 1000 orchids rewards us. Incidentally, the Große Wiesbachhorn is the second highest mountain massif in the Glockner group. At 3564 m, the mountain towers in front of us.

World of experience Piffkar

The last station is the world of adventure Piffkar. A former road attendant's house, which today houses an exhibition on "The Fascination of Mountains".

Join us on the most beautiful panoramic road in Europe: the Grossglockner High Alpine Road.

The Hohe Tauern National Park is the oldest protected area in Austria and offers fantastic insights into the mountains, plants and animals in Carinthia, Salzburg and Tyrol.
