Foods to Avoid with Acid Reflux (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, GERD) | How to Reduce Symptoms

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition involving acid reflux (heartburn) due to relaxation or weakness of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) allowing acidic gastric contents to enter into the esophagus and cause “burning”. A variety of foods and beverages can cause worsening of GERD symptoms (acid reflux or heartburn) through various mechanisms including increasing weakness of the LES and/or delaying gastric emptying. In this lesson, we discuss foods and beverages that should be avoided if you have GERD/acid reflux, because these foods and beverages can worsen acid reflux/heartburn.

Please do a video of what we can actually eat. Because we have nothing left
  • Hi, I agree with all that has been listed in this video and I would like to add a little of my experiences to help anyone with Acid Reflux. I was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2009 and had it removed in 2010. I was told that acid reflux was the probable culprit. My stomach is now much higher and I have to sleep with my head higher than my feet to stop acid reflux at night. Eating food that takes a long time to digest is a no no, (most cheeses, large amounts of meat, etc) Green peppers and green chilli peppers are difficult to digest, pastry is another one. I was told by my surgeon to eat little and often and that is the best advice I can offer, you can eat all the foods in the video above but not later than 6pm. Allow time for your stomach to digest the food long before you go to bed. Cut your meat into small pieces to help digestion and avoid wine and cheese at night. good luck.
  • Taste buds: Spicy food and beer Digestive Tract: So, you have chosen death.

I have suffered with acid reflex for a while now and avoided most of the foods you mention in this video but now I can eat them all without acid reflux. I read an interesting article talking about how acid reflux is not caused by too much acid but rather not enough acid. Generalizing here it said that when your stomach acid is low your stomach isn't triggered to close the valve thus leading to heartburn. The trick is to feed your body things it can use to build up your stomach acid levels again so that the system can function normally. Apple cider vinegar, any vinegar really, lemon juice, turmeric, cinnamon etc. I've been eating those foods and my acid reflux has pretty much gone away after a month. Try and find information on this and share it with your audience. Building up your stomach acid levels is the key to beating heart burn. I'm walking proof of that.
  • 1. Avoid process food 2. Avoid refined food 3. Avoid dairy product 4.avoid gluten product 5.avoid acidic food ( it's include vegetable and fruits research it) Do this in 3 months 1. Eat organic food 2. Eat plant base food (you can also try brown, black and red rice in your diet instead of bread) 3. Eat alkaline food ( it's include vegetable and fruits research it) 4.drink warm water instead of cold 5. Do intermittent fasting ( 8 am to 5 pm or 9 am to 5:30 pm) 6. It's better if your dinner in 5pm or 5:30 pm would alkaline fruits or oatmeal ( research alkaline food and fruits) 7. And also try take probiotic vitamins or supplement Do this in 3 months you will see the result
  • I started eating lemons with my tea lately in the past year. I just figured it out recently that every time I do I get horrendous acid reflux/bowel spasms that were causing chest pain where I thought I had heart problems. It was a nightmare until I realized what was happening. Popcorn is another. I am more sensitive now that I'm 50. My diet is so bland. Stress caused all this years ago. Take care of your health.
  • I can't eat or drink anything I like! I hate this! 😢 I'm so young to be having this issue, I wish I didn't have acid reflux! I've had it for months now and I legit can't eat anything even when I take my medication the heartburn still comes back! I'm sorry I just had to vent about this horrible condition 😭😭

It’s also extremely important to get your body’s PH correct. Once your body’s acidity level is good you’ll notice a lot of this disappear unless you eat late at night. You’ll still have reflux, but it won’t burn.
  • Y’all I got u. I’m new to this GERD thing but this is my diet rn. Morning: oatmeal and boiled eggs Snack: lots of fruits Lunch: brown rice and sum chicken and veggies Snack: peanut butter sandwich(no jelly,) (whole wheat bread) Dinner: turkey ham sandwich and more fruit (the ham can’t be cured or anything like that) Think about it like this, we boutta live longer cuz we going to be eating healthy. AND REMEMBER TO WATER LOTS OF WATER IT TRUELY HELPS
  • Eating in moderation is the wise move. These foods are healthy and helps a lot in our body.
  • @dangordon7679
That was incredibly helpful! I’ve never had acid reflux before and became really worried when it happened. I’m recovering from drinking a lot of alcohol. I was also consuming a lot of the foods and drinks you suggested. I’ll stick to water for now. It was such an intense pain, now after twenty mins and drinking lots of water, it’s finally subsiding 🙏🏼. I have such a high pain threshold, but that was unexpected. It’s so reassuring to know what it was and how to prevent it. Bless you for this video 😇🙏🏼

I reversed my severe GERD and quit taking Rx Prevacid immediately after going on an elimination diet & discovering that dairy was the cause. Once I ditched dairy, my symptoms disappeared completely.
  • @dkagape
Great detailed list. Can’t wait to eat apples, melons, and pears to replace all of my favorite foods 😭😭😭
  • Thank you, now all i have to do is starve to death in order not to worsen my reflux 👍🏻
  • @evabejar8604
Great advice, makes sense! I was eating exactly everything that was worsening my symptoms! So now I can eat Avocados, all veggies and fruits except citrus, beans, grains, seeds, oats, meat. All natural, no fries. Thank you!
  • All the foods you listed were ones that give me trouble. I had a mint julep and fried chicken dinner at restaurant as a special treat recently and it triggered a severe all night episode of acid reflux and other digestive problems. I love coffee in the morning but have to give it up. It is not worth the distress. Love pears so will be eating more of those. Thank you so much for this informative list.
  • @sabahkazmi4345
