Learning to Use Extrasensory Perception with Charles T. Tart

Published 2016-12-15
Charles T. Tart, PhD, is emeritus professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis, as well as the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. He is a past-president of the Parapsychological Association. He has published over 100 scientific papers in parapsychology. He is editor of several anthologies including Altered States of Consciousness, Transpersonal Psychologies, Mind at Large, and Body Mind Spirit: Exploring the Parapsychology of Spirituality. Books that he has authored include Psi: Scientific Studies in the Psychic Realm, States of Consciousness, The End of Materialism, Learning to Use Extrasensory Perception, On Being Stoned, Waking Up, and Open Mind – Discriminating Mind.

Here he describes the “decline effect” in parapsychology research as the result of a psychological “extinction paradigm”. Having subjects repeat a boring task without feedback, in many different disciplines, results in a decline of ability. His research involved training ESP using an automated system, involving forced choices with feedback. Subjects were pre-screened for ESP ability. As predicted, ESP scores did not decline. Tart then shifted to research on remote viewing, in which a single trial may take an entire half-day. Remote viewing subjects routinely receive feedback; and decline effects have not been reported among remote viewers. Tart also describes the difficulties of conducting psi research in a college setting with student subjects.

New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in "parapsychology" ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). He is past-vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology, and is the recipient of the Pathfinder Award from that association for his contributions to the study of consciousness. He is also past-president of the non-profit Intuition Network, an organization dedicated to creating a world in which all people are encouraged to cultivate and apply their inner, intuitive abilities.

All my life I have this thing where I think about a certain topic, and toss it around in my head for a few minutes, then move on. Then, usually later that day, or next day, someone or something comes up with the exact same thing that I had just been considering, or it even being brought up in the news on the TV that night. I remember telling a close friend about this, and said that maybe it was because I think of so much all the time. But it gets really ridiculous how often it happens. My dad told me that when I was little I would often come into the house after playing outside whilst my parents were discussing something, and ask them about that particular topic, when there is no way I could have heard them talking. When my son was young he used to say something seconds after I had thought of it myself. My mum had a really bad feeling one morning about being inside their caravan and had to get out quick, and an hour or so later they had a car accident and the caravan was demolished. She could also get any animal to come up to her and let her talk to them or pet them, even a wild dingo in a national park they visited, and the ranger was amazed. I believe that my mother had something special, and she passed it on through me to my son. As he has gotten older, though, there seems to be less "communication" between us. But I still get thoughts that pop into my head which proceed to come out later from other sources.

Love your interviews, Jeffrey. I have video tapes that date back to your interviews as a young man with Targ, Tart, Sheldrake, Purce, and many others. You have accomplished a unique, valuable contribution to the scientific exploration of the unknown.

How your channel doesn't have 100x the views it does baffles me.
  • @aphysique
Jeffery, never cease to amaze your audience wit such great guests!!

This channel is easily one of my favorite things on the tube. Even though the first incarnation probably started about the same time, I think of it as the spiritual successor to New Dimensions with Michael Toms. Sincere and intelligent discourse that the subject matter deserves but rarely receives.

There is hardly a more bitter, competitive and political community than the academic community.

When I first realized that I had some ability with ESP it was, admittedly, terrifying to me. It scared the shit out of me. I felt as if I had ptsd and I focused on shutting it off. I had to shut it off. Now I let it in bit by bit and try to keep it under my control. It's fascinating to me now. Hearing about how she cried does not surprise me one bit. She had ESP but had been suppressing it. when she realized what she was suppressing, trying to shut out the pain of her experience with it, she realized the pain was real. Some things, you don't want to know. There is a lot of pain in the world and if you feel it, experience it, it can be overwhelming.

Several times in my life I have visited places for the first time but thought I was there before. I had previously dreamt visiting those places and doing same mundane things.

I believe we all have the ability to use these gifts. Most ignore it when things happen, or are told it’s evil, or it’s their imagination, or something. Also, trauma can enhance it.
  • @JustinSoga
