Learning to Fall - Skateboarding at 40 Years Old Living in Japan

Published 2023-07-18
In 2020 I moved to Japan from the UK, in 2021 I started skating again, in 2023 I turned 40. For a long time I have wanted to make a video about my life in Japan and how instrumental skateboarding has been to me helping me find a sense of place and community in Japan as a foreign immigrant -- because for all the fancy words, that's what I am.

In turn, I have come to feel what really matters to me in life, and nothing really captures my spirit in quite the same way that a bit of wood and some wheels does. Whilst my soul is very much that of an artist and creator, I feel that skateboarding is part of the puzzle that helps me feel close to who I am in life and what I want to be, my values, my sense of community, belonging and more.

Whilst it was an idea that sprung from me starting my manga Future Saviors where one of the main characters is a skater (Saki Endo), it has become the perfect complement to my life in Japan. But not without troubles as I badly broke my wrist last year leading to 7 months off the board and being unable to draw for an extended period ot time.

I explore everything that skateboarding is to me and why it matters so much to my life in Japan. Skateboarding taught me how to fall, and get up time and time again, and I am nowhere near done with it as I head into my 40s.

Love this V-log of Japan. As a 40 year old that would love to get into scareboarding this is great! Love your Amiga videos, brings me back. 😌
  • Thanks for the nice blog style video, quite nice to see Japan from regular angles. Happy 40! Seems everyone is now younger than me (at 45), even those growing up with the Amiga. :)

awesome! good to see a video - and the title has universal meaning...now to watch :)

I'm happy that you're happy 😊 Side note, Your personality is a major contributing factor to why I continue to watch your vids (not just amiga and retro gaming as to why I originally subbed).
  • Lovely video, lovely and thoughtful sentiments and it seems you have had something of an Epiphany moment out there in Japan. Really good to hear. I have taken up Yoga since January Last year and it has worked wonders for my health, peace of mind and calm thoughts. As far as I know, you only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough :)

Wishing you a Happy 40th Birthday! Do the things that you like and be enriched by your experiences. I`m starting to enjoy life again after going through cancer and coming out the other side. Who knows, maybe I too will take up skateboarding 🙂 Your videos are really inspiring and you are an amazing person. Great to see parts of Japan in your video. I wonder with all those straight roads, did the Romans ever visit? LOL! Take care.

Hi the voice over is so quiet - it's really hard to here. Anyone else had this issue?
