Todd McFarlane's Spawn was an animated television series which aired on HBO from 1997 through 1999. It was based on the Spawn comic series from Image Comics, and was nominated for and won an Emmy in 1999 for Outstanding Animation Program (longer than one hour).[2] An unrelated series titled Spawn: The Animation is in production since 2009, with Keith David reprising his role as the titular character. Like the comic book, the series features graphic violence, sexual scenes, and extensive use of profanity.[3] Todd McFarlane's Spawn was ranked 5th on IGN's list of The Greatest Comic Book Cartoons Of All Time.[

  • It's a crime that they didn't finish this series. It was top notch in every aspect: animation, dialogues, voice acting, etc.

"Why didn't you help the kid?" "He didn't ask for help" "He's mute" "His problem, not mine"

This series needs to come back. I love how dark and nihilistic it feels.
  • @Revellius21
I never watched this series back when I was a kid. Watching it now makes me see why everyone hates the movie so much. This is a masterpiece
  • @BloodandSoil990
Now I understand why so many hated the live action film. This animated series is true to the comics.
  • I never had HBO. So this is what I was missing?! Adult animation, written for adults, excellent in every respect! Best cartoon I've seen in many years. Most definitely worth watching, if you're a grown up! Thanks for sharing.
  • To have the power of God, and yet to be powerless as a Mortal, Spawn is truly one of the greatest mythological stories of our time.

Dude those homeless people in that one specific alley just can't catch a break.

After all these years "The sad man" part still makes me tear up a little bit.
  • @sv8729
The fact that despite only meeting Spawn twice and seeing some of his supernatural abilities, the only thing Cyan can say about him is that he's sad drives the scene home for me

Man, that shot of Spawn slithering down from the trees and back up is creepy as hell. The silence, the chains following behind him, the way his cape looks like dripping blood as he does, it does such an amazing way in short time showing just how deadly and terrifying he is.
  • Spawn's interaction with the cop at 28 minutes in...fuckin sublime. "Who made you God, little man?" doesn't even hurt him much. treats him like killing him would be beneath them. uses him as a living warning for the others. just perfect, everything I love about a true antihero
  • @IgnatianMystic
Seriously, it is impossible to not like Carob. He's just a big, gentle, great-uncle type who always tries to help Al in any way he can. I love that guy.

Spawn was so good when I was a kid I remember going to the toy shop and the spawn toys were always the most detailed and badass I had ever seen.
  • @thesighbored
Wonder if Spawn will ever get a proper reboot now that we live in an age of superhero movies being made like crazy.
  • I'm so glad I got to experience this show on HBO as a kid. I'll never forget it.
  • "Together we can purge the 10 Hells" "Only if you follow my lead" "With all due respect, it's not in the cards"
  • @Robozilla
You'd think by now we'd get a Spawn movie during the comic book movie era but it's taking too long, hopefully our patience will be rewarded because Spawn deserves do much respect
