One of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's most popular characters, Kass, did not return to the hit game's sequel. In Tears of the Kingdom, Kass is nowhere to be seen, not named at all, and only subtly referred too. However, the tragic reason behind his disappearance has been staring us in the face this entire time, and I uncovered the true reason why Kass isn't around in Tears of the Kingdom.

In this video, I solve one of the biggest mysteries in Tears of the Kingdom: Where is Kass?

I hope you enjoyed this theory! For more theories, I hope you'll subscribe to my channel!

The Rito not expecting Kass to return to the village after the storm clearing up could also be explained by him leaving on a journey before the Upheaval, so he was already gone and wouldn't be expected back yet. My favorite theory is that Kass was going to be used to set the DLC that they decided not to do. He was heavily associated with the BotW DLC and the way Penn's story ends really suggested we were going to get more Kass imo.

I think there's a theory that Kass is also a tropical Rito so he's not originally from the Hyrulean Rito tribe. He's a type of macaw so his constant traveling could be explained due to that. There's also a chance that his wife and all of their children were aware that he'll eventually leave Hyrule for an extended amount of time.

Not having Kass in TotK is criminal Having Penn not even mentioning his name, despite admiring him is EVEN MORE SO.

i like the idea, but i wish we had some actual in-game confirmation. having his family mourn his potential loss would be much more impactful

Very reasonable that Kass followed the song right into the storm. That said, if there's anyone likely to have another 5 kids in some faraway roost it's Mr. Worldwide

I am so sad that Kass isn't in TotK. He was my favorite NPC in BotW and I always got so excited when I heard his song. It pains me, but you might be right about him dying trying to save his people. RIP Kass
  • You might be on to something here. I walked into this video thinking that Kass was off exploring other places, but the tone the game has towards him is a bit somber. This is just me theorizing, but to me, it seems like the developers wanted to embracer darker themes in the game and ended up walking it back. I wouldn't at all be surprised if they initially intended for Kass to more explicitly having died due tot he catastrophe, and then walking it back but leaving some of the dialogue in place. While they have stated they won't be doing DLC, I hope we get a directors cut of the game for Switch 2 that has a little more stuff in it.

I like your idea. In reality though, the more likely answer is that the developers probably just don’t want to reuse his character for some odd reason. I like your theory more as it adds more depth to his character and gives greater purpose to the entire Rito quest.

One of my major issues with TotK is that it's suppose to be a sequel, but it heavily leaves out a lot of stuff from BotW, even the major things like Kass and doesn't continue upon plots or characters from BotW unless they're major, but even then Sages are pretty eh, Sidon/Yunobo were better written in BotW. We can only theorize, when the game should just give us answers to due to it being a sequel. It almost makes it feel that TotK is it's own alternate universe from BotW with how it's set up.

There's a person sized hole in the snow at the top of the mountain in Rito Village before you do the Wind Temple.

Pikango also traveled the land! But I agree Kass being gone is a blow. The emotional justification of killing off a character for the payoff though I think is a little missed with it being so obscure. If a character was clearly in mourning it would hit better.

The thumbnail really asked, "Have you ever heard the Tragedy of Darth Kass the Wise? I thought not; it's not a story Nintendo would tell you."
  • @Moon-Vixen
I agree, but with one small correction. all the rito know the song of the stormwind ark and talk about it like an old tale they all grew up hearing, even the adults. they talked about it and reacted in disbelief at the idea of it being real in the same way we all would over say, the tooth fairy. some of the kids still believe in it, but most see it as nothing more than a fairy tale told to children. Kass wouldn't have been the one to discover it and teach it to everyone if all the adults also grew up with it. I think it's more proof of why Kass was so drawn to the songs of his teacher. musical legends is a deep part of rito culture that he just couldn't resist. and when shit started happening, and he remembered how all the songs he learned really did have meaning, he like everyone else looked at the storm and remembered the stormwind ark, which in the absence of his friend and Hyrule's hero, made him make his own attempt at following the song's guidance only to be hurt by the winds too strong for him, or possibly attacked on his way by a suddenly much stronger monster, and lost his life there. and I'm betting no one has the heart to tell Link he's gone. or, they're so focused on everything else, they forgot that no one told him. (that happened to me with a neighbor. I'd been gone to a con all weekend and one day asked my neighbor where her husband was bc by the time we got back it was "old news" and no one realized we didn't know. thankfully she wasn't offended or anything but it sure was a shock to us both!)
  • @TheBrixHub
I do feel like Nintendo's clear attempt to avoid referencing BotW and the NPCs that met Link in it may have played into this decision slightly. It's really unfortunate just how many weird choices like this there were
  • @JesseLaRusso
what happened to kass in tears of the kingdom? Kass Has Travelled to a New Land It's possible that, after having fulfilled his promise to the Court Poet in Breath of the Wild, Kass decided to seek new horizons and expand his musical repertoire by learning the songs of a new land.
  • @a.jthomas6132
Without Kass, we wouldn’t get an extra confirmation of Princess Zelda’s love for Link.
  • @davidragan9233
I HOPE you are wrong, but I feel you could be correct.
  • Given how willing BotW was to tell us that the Champions and the King had died, I can't imagine that Tears would hesitate to show us Kass's grave if he had perished in between events.
