Mig-27M In War Thunder: A Detailed Review

Published 2021-09-12
Taking a look at the Mig-27M, along with it's new TV and Laser guided weapon systems. This was a very difficult plane to review, and I had to cover a lot of aspects of not just the plane itself but how it fits into the game.

Fun fact: If you designate a spot on the ground via ccrp mechanics (ie activate/deactivate target point under controls/weaponry). This slaves the TV view to that location for TV view guided weapons. It REALLY reduces the time you waste trying to slew the camera around in TV to start scanning for a target to lock.

I think one of the biggest problems in War Thunder is the lack of variety - in missions.. We need bigegr maps, with more ground targets, spread out.. Over longer time.. RB is too Arcadey at the moment.

"Downside: no radar" It never had one. The MiG-27 (and by extension the earlier MiG-23BN for which it was derived) replaced the MiG-23's Sapphire radar With the TV guidance system and some other ground strike specific avionics. It all played into being suited for strikes, CAS, etc. as you mention in the video. Does it suck? Sure but it's actually some appropriate "realism" for once lol I won't comment on the BR and tiers and stuff because that's been a mess in WT for a while now. :P

What you’re referring to about the guided bombs is the guided bomb “basket” (technically that’s only for laser guided bombs but there isn’t much of a difference in WT).The issues is warthunder doesn’t tell you the size of the basket for your speed and altitude. War thunder has an issue that it would require a rework of its augmented reality bomb sight and I still have no idea how they would implement the controls smoothly. War thunder sadly isn’t very well suited for this kind of mission profile without drastic changes to the mission format. A plane like the Mig27 would be following a small flight of fencers with SEAD missiles with fighter cover and that just isn’t going to happen ingame.

A YouTube named Hunter, a master of using CAS in ground RB, has a few videos showing effective use of the smart weapons in game. No doubt though that it take a lot of practice to utilize well, but it can be done and can be quite effective when done right. One trick I noticed he uses to limit his time in the TV targeting mode is that he CCRP designator in third person so that when he switches to the TV it’s already pointed in the general direction of interest. I also was wondering why they didn’t classify this thing as a strike aircraft, but air rb really isn’t the best environment for trying to do CAS missions in the first place, it’s more like 12v12 dogfight (furball) simulator. I wish top tier air rb had smaller team sizes, maybe 6v6 or 8v8 max (a bump in rewards would be necessary too), it would give more freedom to chose how to play all these advanced vehicles.
  • From memories of soviet pilots, MiG-27 did have reputation for complexity, so I guess Gajin really pushed realism on that department.
  • A lot has changed since this video war recorded. Mig27 got more flares and I actually have more success in it than in Mig23mld when it comes to shooting down planes. Otherwise very good review, love your vids!

I disagree with your take on the 27 in ground RB. I have a ton of success with it as a close air support plane. My tactic is to immediately climb to 10km above the AO and circle until I spot a target/s. I then kill the throttle and pop the air brake and enter a nearly vertical dive as slow as possible. AA has an extremely hard time spotting you like this. Next I hop into the TV more and can typically get both missile off and even sometimes still have enough time to squirt some 30mm before pulling out of the dive and escaping at tree top height. You can either head to base to rearm or use your R60’s to take out enemy planes.

These are easily my favorite WT review videos, thanks for making them

Honestly l, really happy I found this channel! Great videos man keep it up you are so close to 2k!

Honestly it is a blast to play it with squad mates in something like a Phantom or a dedicated fighter, I have noticed it’s RWR is very good. Usually I can tell my mates we are getting painted before their RWR goes off. Alone this thing struggles if you are caught with your pants down. In a squad that has good communication you can do a lot of good stuff.

If I recall correctly the cannon actually have a faster rate of fire than the A-10's GAU-8 at full power. Unfortunately it have to be limited to the extent that it became a slightly worse version of the GAU-8 due to the afformentioned issues it brings to the plane itself.

its pretty chill in sim even with mouse aim. The guided rockets and such make it a great ship and carrier hunter. and the Bomb sight is great for base hitting. Its really my first time tryin sim out for more then a laugh and it was not bad, Used it to grind my 27s payload unlocks all the way from 100kgs to all the payloads and im still having fun. Its a 20k repair bill but it can make that back if you play it smart and safe
  • @miko1989100
I think this plane is perfect for air assault arcade games. Using R60m for head-ons against the bombers and rocket pods against the ground units and howitzers
  • @STPromosMusic
As of now, the 27M is my favorite dogfighter, that's what it can do decently well, R-60M's plus a godly cannon XD
  • @sirbonobo3907
nothing wrong with your drawings! Thanks for those great videos!
