And in the year 2000 an unnamed Italian club pulled out of the competition at the last minute, and Bradford City's chairman at the time Geoffrey Richmond applied to fill that vacancy, and UEFA accepted and invited them to the competition.

Not sure if it was mentioned yet, but Bradford played in Europe in 2000 because the Intertoto cup was kind of invitation-based. It was a really weird competition, with multiple winners and lots of mid-tier teams from all over Europe without clear qualification rules. There were rumours that some Italian team opted quite late in the planning, and the Bradford board applied to replace them and were accepted.
