Synopsis
Slow-witted Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) has never thought of himself as disadvantaged, and thanks to his supportive mother (Sally Field), he leads anything but a restricted life. Whether dominating on the gridiron as a college football star, fighting in Vietnam or captaining a shrimp boat, Forrest inspires people with his childlike optimism. But one person Forrest cares about most may be the most difficult to save -- his childhood love, the sweet but troubled Jenny (Robin Wright).

This movie makes me cry because Forrest faces life and Jenny runs from it, but people hate on her SO MUCH as if her life isn't full of trauma and violence since she was a kid. A life full of trauma can make you forget you deserve love.

Gary Sinise, the actor that played Lt. Dan, was so affected by this role he became deeply involved in Veteran organizations. He started his own foundation for vets, The Gary Sinise Foundation. He also tours with the USO to active duty shows around the world with his band, The Lt. Dan Band.

Forrest asking if his son is smart or not breaks me every single time. Best movie.
  • I'll never forget when I finally realized the significance of Forrest seeing the birds fly away after he visits Jenny's grave. God answered the prayer she made when she was a little girl to make her a bird so she could fly away <3 This movie never fails to make me cry.
  • You're sympathy for Jenny was a relief. Too many people cant understand her trauma. Much appreciated.
  • @MartinWWalker
I think Jenny is one of the most accurate depictions of what childhood absue does to an adult. I hate that so many people hate her as a character. She's not evil, just broken.

I always cry when Forrest finds out he’s a father and his immediate thought is “is he smart or is he like me?”
  • @doubleT84
Forrest's speech about the war was "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing." according to Tom Hanks.
  • @SirPaladin
A "million dollar wound" actually means something that is serious enough to get you taken out of combat service but at the same time NOT serious enough to leave any permanent noticeable damage.
  • @brianbalcer
Nixon resigned because of the Watergate scandal. Which, in the scene here, it was from Forest calling the security/front desk that the flashlights were keeping him up. Something I never noticed until now (probably seen the movie 20 times) is that Lt. Dan tells him that the day Forest becomes a shrimp boat captain is the day he becomes an astronaut, and then Lt. Dan ends up having prosthetic leg made from the same material Nasa uses. Not sure if that was intentional but thought it was kinda cool.
  • Fun fact: the Alabama accent of the young actor playing young Forrest, is real. So real, that Tom Hanks decided to study that boys accent for a long time to get his older Forrest's accent to match the boy. I think I've seen this movie (and Sahwshank Redemption) over 100 times, and it never gets old. Beautiful story..glad you enjoyed it.

People who do not love themselves are capable of loving others, but are not capable of accepting the love of others. Jenny is the embodiment of this.
  • Im autistic and chronically ill myself and rewatching this movie as my medical condition gets worse reminds me that even if im not like everyone else, I can still be there for people and still be me
  • @chrishouseinc
Just a little detail I wanted to point out I never see mentioned. At Forest's wedding Lt Dan shows up with his fiancé, who is clearly of Asian descent, further showing his growth as a person through his interactions with Forest given that they met in Vietnam during wartime which typically fostered a lot of hatred and racism from many returning vets. It's like his wholesomeness is contagious.
  • @PickledShark
So many veterans wrote to Gary Sinise saying that his portrayal of what it’s like to be a Vietnam veteran spoke to their souls, that it permanently changed the trajectory of his life. He now works closely with veterans as one of the most effective advocates for their needs. So not only is this a heartwarming fictional story, but it’s one that positively changed the lives of many people
  • @gourdtube
I almost cried when you said "I hope no one treats him bad." I hope no one treats you bad Frank. you're too nice
  • @lumina1104
The Medal of Honor does mean a lot. It's the highest honor granted by the U.S. Government. For him to give the medal to Jenny just showed how selfless he was.
  • @claytheist6736
There’s so many emotional parts in this movie, but one of my favorite little details is that the bus driver is chewing gum at the end, not smoking. Shows the time that passed in terms of society becoming more health conscious, and also she was making steps forward and seems happier.
  • @AtlasBlizzard
Forrest saying "that's all I have to say about that" is really strong. He can talk about everything in his life, but when it comes to his really painful memories, he stops the story. Great reaction!
  • Finally! Someone who pauses the film, makes their point, and resumes it. So many reactors miss important moments because they're talking. Not that talking is bad, it enhances the reaction, but not at the cost of the feature. Thanks for keeping me engaged and showing your viewpoint while also respecting the film 😭😭
