Photographing a Great Horned Owl

Published 2023-05-26
This week, I had an amazing experience of photographing a Great Horned Owl in Northern California. I share a video and photos from the evening, walk through my settings and how I approached photographing an owl in darkness, and finish with a discussion as to how I think about exposure in these situations and why the big telephoto lenses help.

  • Cool. I have an ef 300 f2.8 on a 1Dx mark 1. I use an R6 and R7 with the 100 500 and now want to experiment with the 300 on my R7. I just got back from the Sac Valley wildlife areas looking for owls and eagles but never found a one. Thanks for the educational video.

Great video, Matthew! I have considered the 400 f/4 DO a couple of times, but I’ve been put off by reviews saying it’s not very sharp. Your images show that those reviews could be wrong. On a different subject, maybe you should have moved to Chattanooga instead of California so you could go shooting with myself and Forrest West. 🤷🏻‍♂️✅🤓
