i'm not in a position to tell people how to parent but giving your kid a phone/tablet (especially if it has internet access) at 4 yrs old is REALLY young.

turn off notifications. without the constant beeping and blinks the temptation to check your device can be dramatically lessened.
  • @phantomstrider
This is surprisingly confronting. I check my phone for my work and social media a lot. I feel a bit more conscientious about how often I'll check now.
  • @braidenf
Are they mocking us, because we're on our devices watching this?

I quit social media over 2 years ago and it is the most freeing thing i have ever done. I don't see me ever going back. I wish that people would just try it for a week to see how they feel at the end of it.

Am I the only one who is disturbed by the lack of reaction from the parents when they find out their son is spending up to 11 hours on that thing?
  • @Stormwern
This is such a huge problem. They should do another episode on Facebook-depression.

My phone is always in silence, mainly because notification is annoying and nobody will call me anyway :(
  • @dillsimmons
My youtube usage is at least 3-4 hours a day, no joke.

The Samsung tablet is just being used as a babysitter!
  • It's just the way things are these days. When I was a kid, my friends and I were addicted to riding our bikes after school.

Take a look at the Black Mirror episode 'Nose Dive'. We are slowly getting there...

there's studies that tell us kids under twelve shouldn;t use these devices at all as ladies says... I encounter countless phone zombies everyday in traffic, making my life dangerous, which really upsets me, not them, cos they don;t care about anything going on outside their apps, it's sad

That little boy looks dead inside. When I quit social media there was a lot of "I'll miss your posts and photos." Most of these people are people I know in real life. Some live far away, but they could easily text or call me. Nothing. Very few have made efforts to keep in touch. I recently switched to a flip phone to curb my mindless surfing. I'm liberated.

My little sister is ten, and my parents ignorants bought her a phone. Now she spends only a quarter of her day sleeping and the rest on her phone. Really disgusts me. She doesn't even goes to say hello to my dad when he come home from work. Kids under 13 shouldn't be given access to this devices. I didn't even get a phone until 13, what make her more capable to have a phone? This tech ruined family interaction.

My neighbor(s) have 5 children and my region recently had a big snow storm almost a week ago. I work from home and during this entire length of time the children have only been out to play once. Why were they outside? The power went out for several hours so they had nothing to do. To me this is crazy. When I was a kid I spent hours outside during the winter.
  • A lot of times, it's just more convenient to give a kid a tablet or a phone just to help them behave in public, sadly. I've seen many such children who spend all day on these devices, failing to interact with the environment (other people, toys, games, books, etc.) but becoming eloquent on social media or games, like the son in this family. As was mentioned, giving him something to do outside of the tablet helps him cut his time down. The parents need to lead by example and put their phones down, too. My parents did the same thing, and they used to force me to read, interact with people professionally at a very young age, answer the home phone, etc., and they always led by example. Kids idolize their parents, and these parents can't place all of the blame on social media or the devices social media platforms use.

I've never had one because I know I would turn into one of the walking phone zombies I see everywhere.
