Rahul Dev Burman (1939-1994). Story goes that when he was born, Ashok Kumar visited S.D. Burman (1906-1975) and R.D would cry in the fifth note 🎵 🎶 of the scale- Pa. This is how he acquired the nickname Pancham. His career stretches back to the 1960s'- he got his first break courtesy of comedian Mehmood (1932-2004) who gave him a break in Chhote Nawab (1961) because he wouldn't stop drumming his fingers on Mehmood's car 🏎️!!!!! 😂 As a matter of fact, the harmonica solo in Hemant Kumar's "Hai Apna Dil" from Solva Saal (1958) was played by R.D. Burman!!! His work was with Nasir Hussain (1931-2002). Films like Teesri Manzil (1966) with Shammi Kapoor, Asha Parekh, Helen, Salim Khan & Prem Chopra. Classics by Mohammed Rafi "Diwana Mujhsa Nahin", "Tumne Mujhe Dekha"- this was the first song Shammi Kapoor shot for after the demise of his wife Geeta Bali due to Smallpox in 1965. Not forgetting duets like "O Mere Sona", "Dekhiye Sahibon" & "O Haseen Zulhonwali"- Mohammed Rafi & Asha Bhosle. Rajesh Khanna (1942-2012) got his break from United Producers and did Nasir's next venture Baharon Ke Sapne (1967) with "Hit Girl" Asha Parekh. Two selections that come to mind are Lata Mangeshkar's "Kya Jaanu Sajaan" & Mohammed Rafi's "Zamane Ne Mare Jawan Kaise Kaise". He did the musical score of Padosan (1968) with actor/singer Kishore Kumar (1929-1987) as Guru and comedians Mukri, Raj Kishore, Mehmood & hero Sunil Dutt as Bhole. Classic music 🎵 🎶 "Mere Samnewali Khidki Mein" Lata's "Main Chali Main Chali". Saira Banu is fed up with this Tansen Ka bacha- Aaaahhhh!!! 😂 "Ek Chatur Naar" with the talents of Kishoreda & Manna Dey. The decade closes in 1969 with Pyar Ka Mausam where interestingly Pancham had a minor (small) role in the film (Side Note: I forgot he was also in Bhoot Bungla (1965) with comedian Mehmood - "Jago Sonewalo Suno Meri Kahani"). Kishoreda sings for Bharat Bhushan "Tum Bin Jaoon Kahan" while Rafi Saab sings for Shashi Kapoor the same song- serenading heroine Asha Parekh. Lata Mangeshkar's "Na Ja O Mere Humdum" is a beloved pining for her love ❤ one. As we enter the 1970s' Rahul Dev Burman is on a roll- The Train with Rajesh Khanna & Nanda "Gulabi Aankhen"- Mohammed Rafi, "Kis Liye Maine Pyar Ka"??- Lata Mangeshkar. He continues working with Nasir Hussain- Caravan (1971) "Kitna Pyaara Wada" Lata & Rafi, "Piya Tu Ab To Aaja"- Asha Bhosle "Hum To Rahi Pyar Ke"- Kishore Kumar. Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973) with Dharmendra, Tariq, Vijay Arora (1944-2007) & Zeenat Aman- a lost & found film similar in format to B.R. Films Waqt (1965). Classic hits "Aap Ke Kamre Mein Koi Rehta Hai", "Lekar Hum Diwane Dil"- duets of Kishore Kumar & Asha Bhosle. The title song is given by Lata Mangeshkar whereas in the climax of the film 🎥 "Yaadon Ki Baaraat" is done by Kishoreda & Rafi Saab. Dharmendra was nominated for the Best Actor award 🏆 in 1974. I genuinely believe he deserved to win for the role he portrayed. Hum Kisise Kum Naheen (1977) was a Blockbuster when it was released along with Manmohan Desai's Amar Akbar Anthony & Dharam Veer. Starring Lover Boy Rishi Kapoor (1952-2020), Tariq & Kajaal Kiran. Beautiful music 🎵 🎶🎙️ 💿 as always Kishore's " Bachna Aye Hasino" the competition medley "Chand Mera Dil", qawwali "Hai Agar Dushman" by Mohammed Rafi & Asha Bhosle picturized on Rishi Kapoor & Zeenat Aman. Tariq gives a powerful rendition of Mohammed Rafi's "Kya Hua Tera Vaada"- What Happened To The Promise You Made?". He would take his final Filmfare Award 🏆 for Best Male Playback Singer & The National Award during Filmfare's Silver Jubilee- 25th Anniversary. By the 1980s' R.D. Burman was sidelined for Bappi Lahiri & disco 🪩. His final musical score was for 1942: A Love Story (1994). Lata Mangeshkar & Kumar Sanu each had their rendition of "Kuch Na Kaho" not forgetting Kumar Sanu's "Ek Ladki To Dekha To Aisa Laga". Rest in Peace 🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🌹🌹🌹🌹 Maestro!!!!
