King Solomon is legendary for his wisdom and knowledge, which, according to legend extended to the Occult. Though the "Key of Solomon" magical literature is famous in western ritual magic, what do we know about the origins of this school of sorcery - What are the origins of Solomonic Magic? In this episode I turn to the earliest text of Solomonic Magic, the Greek Hygromancy or "Talismanic Treatise of Solomon to his Son Rehoboam." In this complex Greek text, Solomon describes the evocation of Planetary Spirits, Angels and Demons, Elective Astrology, and the Occult virtues of "Words, Herbs & Stones." In addition, this text attracted a vast array of ritual and magical microforms which go on to form the structural core of western magic - from the knife of art, various forms of divination, the magical circle and, most famously, the powerful Ring and Seal of Solomon. This magical treatise is truly foundational for the history of Western Magic and Occultism.

Finally, a person who talks about magical history objectively, not as someone trying to pull me into their cult. I'm just here to listen to the stories and you do that with style. Thank you for your work.
  • You're more "boss" than any magical blade used to endow a ring with power! I swear, your channel is a true blessing for someone, like me, who's too poor to study this material at university. ❤

I almost scrolled past you because you had a rabbi/preacher look and I thought this would be another “stay away “ lesson. Man am I a judgemental pos. You are scholarly and awesome- and you know your stuff. So pleased after endless scrolling for information and being disappointed that I ran into you! Thank you. You, sir, are amazeballs.
  • Dr. Sledge, I discovered your channel a couple of months ago and let me say that I so much appreciate your videos. Legitimate factual information about esoteric topics seems to be very hard to come by. I was thinking about this earlier today: channels like this with the more scholarly and "boring" (heavy quotations) tend to have a smaller, but overall more grateful fan base than the more "entertaining" (heavy quotations again) channels. We may not be the biggest fan base in the world, but we are eternally grateful for your extensive research and knowledge. Thank you Dr. Sledge!
  • I absolutely love all of your content, and I love your strive to creating accessible free content in occult, and Esoteric history! I have so much respect for you.
  • Dr Sledge, you and a few others (Angela Puca and Foolish Fish among them) have inspired me to begin to plan to get a Master's Degree in Western Esotericism at the University of Amsterdam. This will depend on my husband and me being able to retire in Amsterdam - we are in the US right now. Wish me luck, and thank you for all you do
  • The planetary seals/magic symbols on these books always look super interesting to me, and I'm glad you made a whole video on those back in the day. I enjoyed this one a lot!

Dr Sledge, you make solitude spirituality more bearable. Thankyou for sharing your knowledge.

Finally, a person who understands the relationship between rationality and irrationality in magic! You make me want to learn and study more about magic. As a liberal-arts-educated New Yorker and Jew, I found it very helpful to watch you share tips and expertise along the way. So, thank you for your wisdom, Dr. Sledge.

I just recently came across your channel and love the content. While I was studying for my PhD. in anthropology, I was very intrigued with the religious, and specifically the occult, practices and beliefs of people and civilizations. Your content is very approachable and, most importantly, accurate. The amount of misinterpreted or misinformed information on these topics is myriad so it really is nice to see you sharing your expertise with the masses.

Thank you for your kind words, Dr Sledge!
  • “It’s a living text.” You never cease with these straight bangers of videos. I get excited every time I see a new one, thanks for all you do.
  • I recently read the Testament of Solomon, written, most likely, sometime during the 2nd century A.D. It reveals much about where the later medieval ideas for Solomonic magic came from.

When it comes to getting your monies worth watching a video there is no better value on all of Youtube than right here. You are legit getting scholarly grade quality knowledge here in a digestible form that you would have to pay for a whole college tuition to even come close to getting it elsewhere. If anybody deserves a patreon donation or super thanks its this man right here. Thanks again as always Doc for your hard work.

Truly appreciate the bibliographical recommendations you give here — there are many "esoterica/occult"-focused channels — and, hell, this goes for general history channels too — that are glad to ramble about this or that... but they never tell you any "further reading" (or nothing but popular treatments one could have easily just searched up)!
  • @catcans
Knowing me if I cast a protective circle the entities will sneak into it behind me and then I'm stuck with them.
  • As a fan of Solomonic Demonology and medieval grimoires, I absolutely loved this video. Thank you so much.
  • The “hella syncretism” line cracked me up haha, but on a serious note these videos are extremely informative while keeping still pretty short and sweet, giving a lot of great starting points to dive deeper. Thanks man
