Algorithms Stole Your Future

Algorithms have fundamentally changed the way we live, laugh, love, and....... consume. Blockbuster to Netflix, Dunks to 3 pointers, Console Wars to Game Passes, you can thank our machine learning overlords for all of it. But why isn't the world getting better? Shouldn't that be the point of these deeply complex algorithms, to improve day to day life? Shouldn't they work to build on what we already have, the things we look back on with fondness? Well, I think by this point we all know that isnt their goal, so lets find out what is.

Really quickly, a couple disclaimers: Firstly I don't want this video, or its tone, to convey the idea that I think I’m above these issues, that I think I’m free of them, or that I think these issues are a failing of my generation, my beliefs represent the exact opposite of that actually. I’m on your side, and just like you, I too put my depression on one tweet at a time. Secondly, some segments of the video are gonna get real slow and personal, and if that's not your jive, right above this is a menu of hyperlinked timestamps for you to jump around with in case you’re looking for something a bit different, I’m particularly proud of the videogame segment which isn't for a ways into the video and would hate for you to miss it, hope you enjoy!

I’m not exaggerating when I say that this video has truly moved me. This topic has been in my mind for years. I’ve discussed it with friends, family, stranger on the internet. But I always felt like it was muddy, like it wasn’t a clear picture. This video is what makes it clear. This is the type of topics (along with the accompanying socio-political stuff that comes with it) that we should be talking about. We both were born around the same time, and grew up in a sorta similar social environment. I think we’re the youngest generation that could be aware of the dystopian future we have ahead and the clear signs of it. I think it is our duty as the last generation to not have fully grown up in the current society, to make sure that the following generations have a clear understanding of what’s going. Very much like you making this video. I really enjoy your videos, and they’re always a blast to watch… but this, this video… this is a masterpiece… it might because of the time span between the last video and this one but, this truly feels like you’ve graduated to another level.

incredible content, your quality is genuinely up there with the best of the best on this platform and elsewhere. also, I can't fathom where one would even begin writing a script for a topic such as this; let alone in a manner that functions cogently whilst reciting from a mountain in alaska, so kudos to you for managing such a herculean feat. long live the beef boys
  • @ManyKudos
Goosebumps: the video as in it gave me goosebumps multiple times, not that it was about goosebumps the show you should also do a video about goosebumps the show

Smart Phones are the worst invention we've made because it gave the masses access to something beautiful, and when the masses get something and it becomes the norm, our corporate overlords take it and monetize the shit out of it. This has directly led us to the road we're at now. A centralized internet has put us on a road that is disastrous, one that will lead us further into our own demise. One that has allowed our corporate overlords to control every facet of our lives, willingly misinform and pit us against each other. We all must pray to the mighty Montezon, the algorithm responsible for our lives, to hope that we can get further in our lives of futility. Work for the machine and never think for yourself. We know what's best for you. Thank you James for this wonderful video. I don't know how we can get off this terrifying road and onto one for a bright future, but no matter how you look at it, one way or another, the future is bleak. But hey, at least we have aMazOn!!!
  • As a 21 year old dude, I was lucky enough to spend my early childhood in the absence of smartphones and just having to either play outside with friends or have them come over to do Legos or Wii games. Secondary school however everyone got smartphones and I have never experienced life after that without one. This video showed what things I missed because of that and it makes me even more angry at the system we created that made that happen. Thanks for the great video, even though it made me a little sad.

man jambarino really came back with a touching reflecting banger. this is your best work yet. also if Chiodos has taught me anything, it's that there's no penguins in alaska
  • I recommend the German novel "Qualityland" if you love this video essay as much as I do. The novel is a thought experiment about what society would evolve, or rather devolve, to, if we continue todays zeitgeist and neoliberal ideology. But it's not as depressing as it sounds it's actually hilarious thanks to the authors style. The novel has some very obvious parallels to 1984 and these parallels are probably the most interesting point the novel makes. A totalitarian state is not the only way for society to stagnate into a nightmare of oppression, we are on the best way to get there aswell. The book is only really funny in German, especially the audio book read by the author himself, but the English version is available aswell and In my opinion EVERYONE should read it.

You only having 22k subs is a sin. Everyone should be able to see this work of art you have created as long as the rest of your amazing videos. I am so glad I found you all that time ago. Your videos are such a blessing to my sub box.
  • I love how insightful and genuine this video is. That can be hard to find on this platform nowadays.
  • @dabisu4104

  • @morgandril2578
Man, the editing, comedy, and writing for these videos is up there with MLM channels, and really high budget videos. Keep up the great work man. Love your stuff

I can tell you put a lot of work in this video. I had to watch it in chunks because of the length but really good job. So entertaining, so many well though out points. Thank you for this.
  • @magsley579
This just randomly popped up in my recommended, the algorithm just brought me my new favorite small youtuber. How ironic lol.
  • @loekos
corporations and billionaires are the root reason why the internet has become so awful and exploitative, and it'll happen to any and every other facet of our lives if left unchecked. this video is a fantastic encapsulation of how and why the internet has become what it is, great job dude 👍
  • @Chris.Batchelor
34:40 I vividly remember my friends PS2 copy of Guitar Hero 3 had a glitch where spikes would come out of the singers head and literally fly around the background everytime he moved his head. It was absolutely hilarious and I’ll always remember that moment.
  • @YA-yu5hu
