My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a 2002 romantic comedy film directed by Joel Zwick and written by Nia Vardalos, who also stars in the film as Fotoula "Toula" Portokalos, a middle-class Greek American woman who falls in love with White Anglo-Saxon Protestant Ian Miller. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and, at the 75th Academy Awards, it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

A sleeper hit, the film became the highest-grossing romantic comedy domestically of all time, and grossed $241.4 million in North America, despite never reaching number one at the box office during its release. It was the highest-grossing film with that distinction for 14 years until the animated film Sing grossed $268 million in 2016.

The film spawned a franchise, which inspired the short-lived 2003 CBS TV series My Big Fat Greek Life, and a film sequel titled My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, which was released on March 25, 2016, by Universal Pictures. A third film, entitled My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, is currently in production at Universal Pictures' division Focus Features.

I'm Mexican American and my two best friends are from India, and we laugh so hard every time we watch this movie because it reminds us of our families and our culture. It's a classic in our books

The bit where the Mother talks about the war and then the Grandmother comes in with the wedding head wreaths, and you get the shot of all 3 of them looking into the mirror. It always makes me cry. 😭💕

I got married at 39 actually 13 days before my 40th birthday. Did I feel like an old maid? Hell no. I was ready at that point. I went through some ups and downs in life, and I realized that you get married when you’re ready, with the right person, not because there’s a ticking clock. We’ve been happily married for 25 years.

Loved this movie. My "family" couldn't be more different. An alcoholic father. A depressed, heavily medicated mother. No love. No closeness or involvement. No one there for me or my siblings. My Dad was in the military so we moved often. We were too poor to visit relatives in other states. My Dad didn't even go to either of his parents funerals. He didn't go to my highschool graduation or college graduation. Said he was too busy. Neither of my parents were ever involved with us. When I go to the 12 Steps Groups for Adult Children of Alcoholics I hear that millions of people who grew up in alcoholic families had a similar experience of no one being there for them. So we watch movies like this in wonder and amazement that people have this kind of experience.

My husband is Greek. (I'm Korean) I completely understand this now, especially after our wedding.

"Both different, but In the end, we are all fruit." Words of true wisdom to live by!

I'm Mexican-American, and of course, this film is way too relatable. I grew up feeling weird, lonely, ugly....with no hope. When the love of my life found me, my parents made our union difficult. I tired to push this beautiful man out of my life to spare him from my family, and my low self esteem for being different---but he thought I was worth it. He never gave up on me, and now we're happy. This film is a fun, touching reminder that I'm not alone. Blessed be all the wonderful men that love us weird, foreign women with strange, difficult families 💕

I watch this movie 15.times. It's crazy like mental illness 😂 1. For the wonderful Greek culture. 2. For the hilarious dialogues. 3. For the tight & caring kinship. 4. For Dad's love to Toula, that's almost obsessive. 5. For Mom's wisdom & trickery. 6. For Auntie who owns travel agency, claiming she is the best cook, wanting to cook lamb for Ian who's vegetarian. 7. For Toula & Ian first conversation inside the travel office. 8. For Toula & Ian first date. 9. For Toula & Ian second date and first kiss. 10. For their 3rd kiss when Toula was wearing red dress, and Ian was begging for more. 11. For Toula & Ian afterglow, and Ian proposed to Toula..12. For Nicky, the primadona cousin who's sexy, bold, brash & funny. 13. For all the kitchen scenes..14. For Ian baptism inside Greek Orthodox Church. 15. For the wedding extravaganza. I really love this movie. It makes me ponder about my life, I am.not even Greek.
  • My favourite relationship in the film is Toula and her brother Nick. Louis Mandylor really displayed the love and protectiveness of a brother towards his sister and I really loved how he was always so supportive of her and Ian and encouraged her whenever she had doubts. You can also see what a great uncle he is to Athena's boys and how he loves his father and wants his approval for his painting aspirations, but at no point does he show any bitterness towards him for being oblivious/indifferent, or envy that Toula is breaking with tradition and getting support from the family when he isn't.

I loved this. I’m watching it for the first time in 2024. And I love it!! Thank you 🇬🇷 ❤❤❤
  • ✍Hello...I saw this movie years ago at the theater and love it so much we bought it to watch any time I want. Now watching it all these years later it brings back the memories of my life. I'm an only child and my husband from a family of 5. I met his family which are Italian at Easter 🐇 and it was almost like this movie except there were kids everywhere and card tables set up in the backyard everyone playing cards and others gathered around talking and having fun. Just like Ian said my life was boring and I came alive when we married. I'm a widow now. We were married 42 years it would be 61 this year and now its just me my oldest daughter and her sister my youngest and her husband. Everyone else has since passed away but I have my memories of all those good times. Thanks for sharing this movie. Bye from Ohio🌹

"No queen size. They make me look fat." The dialog is incredible in this film.

I’m a Swiss girl, Swiss parents don’t even buy you a peanut for your Wedding, in fact they didn’t even turn up :/ so this movie made me cry, about the love these people have in their hearts…

I am a retired teacher of Latin. Approximately 50% to 60% of English vocabulary words are derived from Latin and Greek. Not all vocabulary words are derived from Greek as Mr. Portokalos insists. However, that he says so is comical and somewhat endearing.
