Van Life in Japan: exploring and skating the Atsumi Peninsula, Aichi

Published 2023-11-02
Following on from the first Van Life video I took a trip from where I live in Mie prefecture over to Aichi Prefecture and the Atsumi Peninsula.

This time I wanted to skate along the coast from Akabane Long Beach to just beyond New Japan Beach to Shimokitsunezawa, a round trip of apparently 15km, or just under 10 miles. After that I went to explore further along the natural beauty of the coastline including a nice small and modest shrine in Irago. I finished up viewing a park on a very cold evening and prepared to watch the sunrise the following morning.

Join me for a trip in Roland my little Suzuki Every minivan where I take in lots of beautiful sights and also cross the Ise Bay on the car ferry from Irago to Toba before winding up at my "local" skatepark in Matsusaka City to spend a few hours messing about on my skateboard.

If you want to check out Famidaily, the YouTube series I mention in the video, please check out ‪@RndStranger‬ 's channel. He has been covering the entirety of the Famicom library excluding the disk system over the last nearly 3 years and has nearly finished. A remarkable feat.

I'm sat here eating my chicken Fajitas watching this, perfect dinner time viewing and way better than the crap that is on the TV. Or not as the case is, as I don't own a TV... well not a working one anyway :-) I know I rarely comment, even though I do still watch all of your videos. So I thought for once I would make that effort because this whole journey of yours deserves so much more recognition than I think it gets. And I don't just mean the physical traveling aspect of the word journey. The last year or so you have really had so much more noticeable positivity in you. Not that you are someone I see as being negative, I'm not saying that at all because you're not. It's like you've moved on from being positive and determined to make things work to loving life. You've found your groove to to speak. I had to laugh to myself when you had that dig at the "doing this and pretending we're enjoying it" UK mentality. I know exactly what you mean. I simply can't be around that anymore, it winds me up too much. You mention later on about how from the outside it all looks easy and how you've had to work hard to get where you are, with respect to being able to travel around and do the things you want to do. And I know the language itself hasn't been the only barrier. Do you feel that in the UK we are not encouraged, even discouraged to grow and try new things? Perhaps that is just my own experiences talking here, but I'm curious of your perspective. Is there perhaps something to be said for not having people around that know you (albeit that I know it has been very lonely at times) that has enabled you to be able to do what you want without any of the what will this person think or say going on? Perhaps you don't have that problem anyway, but I'm curious if you do. Either way, you do seem very confident in everything you set your mind to doing, even if perhaps that's not the case from your perspective. I was wondered how much space there was to sleep in the van when I watched the previous van video. Is there actually enough room to stretch out fully in the back, or do you just curl up like a cat? I know that some of the mini vans (Atrai, Suzuki) have about the same length as a single bed in the back, but I wasn't sure about the ones with the "stubby nose" as I like to call them. There is some really beautiful scenery and the beeches look golden and clean. I really like the rock formations too, they are sometimes like little islands in their own right. Some of the skating footage gave me the same vibe as videos by Sheiy. You really captured the feel of traveling rather than it just being a video of places you have visited. Check out a couple of his videos and you'll get what I mean, especially the train riding or cycling ones. I don't suggest you go train surfing in Japan though ;-) Your video editing has always been good, but the cuts between views and scenes really worked in this one. Again, flicking between the scenery, yourself and your skateboard really made it feel like being on the journey with you. Skating looks like it gives the same freedom as a bike but perhaps in some ways more practical for stopping and starting and being able to just go off track and do a bit of walking. Obviously not so practical for some types of ground, but it's perfect for these kinds of routes. @23:50 that's one hell of a game of 3D Tetris! (I know it's to break the power of the water up) @25:00 I knew you were going to stop there, I'd have done the same, it looked like there was a decent edge overlooking the sea at the end of that flattened bit @28:00 skating on the edge...we don't want more broken wrists or anything else! Still... I would have wanted to do the same if I could skate, which i can't, so I would have just fallen and died on the giant Tetris blocks. Out of interest, what sort of cameras are you using for your video recording at various points? Do you use a different camera for skating and walking or in the van or all the same camera like a Go Pro or something similar? I know you bought yourself a decent camera for stills but I can't remember if you said you also used that for video too. Although I imagine you don't shove that one on the end of a stick while skating, that would be asking for trouble. Final thoughts; You're looking strong, fit and happy. More skater cam please, it really works 👍

It's great how you're using your GPS set to imperial units in a country that only uses metrics 😅 ... Lovely bit of video that, especially the sunrise 👍. Always wondered about using the ferry with the car, too... It can be difficult to find into on it. Glad to see you're enjoying yourself again. Maybe I'm wrong but it sounds like you've had a weight taken off you shoulders 😅
  • Skating for bothfun and transport is wonderful. That little van of yours is neat,.😀
