Adding a baby doesnt add a character, it adds a baby.

I got the impression that this would be the last one because it ended with all the characters from the movies all dancing.

Cinema employees watching a bunch of Teens to Young Adults in tuxedos walking into a mid kids movie:

To borrow a quote from Linkara: "Teach kids to laugh at clever humor, not "Norg has a cold"." Also as PhantomStrider once said: "Even if you say "it's just for kids, it's not like adults have to like it", that's not entirely true. Parents often have to see these movies with their kids. So they have to be written with some intelligence and insight, while also being entertaining to kids. That's the magic of a good kids cartoon."

It seems like they wanted to make a despicable me TV show, and the project got axed, so they stitched a season of sitcom plotlines together into a movie.

Everytime I think of the current quality of the Despicable Me franchise, I go back to the stuff you said in your Transformers 5 video: "But this series, for whatever reason, is never affected. They always make tons and tons of money" "It is so tired and repetitive..." "You have the right to demand better....You have the right to demand more exciting crap"

What bothers me the most is that the youngest girl is still a freaking toddler
  • My biggest issue with the film is that it has artificial stakes. It claims that Gru and his family are in danger, but you never see them be in danger. For example, the scene in the grocery store. The trailer made me think a supervillain was attacking Lucy and the girls, but no. It was just a random woman who had beef with Lucy. The villain that claims to be on the hunt for Gru is barely seen being on the hunt for Gru; all you get is hilarious evil antics while he flies around. Also, the film sets up plotlines that go nowhere like Margo (who's barely in the movie), struggling with moving to a new school, and Agnes not wanting to use her fake name. What I did like was the Mega Minions and the bond that forms with Gru and the neighbor's daughter (a little bit). Also Agnes. I love Agnes.
  • I agree Doug. A movie should have comical jokes to entertain audiences. Films don't need characters moving at the same certain pace just to make kids happy. They need emotion , they power , they need to have certain traits to get audiences into what's happening in the film.

An interesting take for the next Despicable Me movie (which the director will most likely never consider) is to do a time skip for the girls grow up. Maybe Margo starting her freshman year, Edith starting 7th grade, and Agnes starting 5th grade. The movie could be about Gru and Lucy struggling to balance out their job while helping out the girls with school work and raising Gru Jr. There could be a boy that falls in love with Margo, the boy’s parent (or parents) could be a villain,& the final battle taking place at high school prom.

Their was one joke that did actually land pretty hard in my theater near the beginning of the film and it involved gru being gone so long that his wife asks if he remembered to bring home some milk that’s a decent dark joke
  • @BreadHart
At least the previous movie had the novelty of having Trey Parker in it.
  • Is it just me or does the villain look like they just ripped off Dr. Doofenshmitz's design?
  • @Nerdtendo6366
I rather have a memorably bad film than a forgettable film any days of the week

6:01 To be fair, they do play around with the Spider-Man 2 reference. When the stretchy Minion stops the train, you're thinking, "Oh, he stopped the train like in Spider-Man 2." But no, it actually gets flung backwards and hits the side of a building!
  • @MauFerrer2000
Ever since the second movie they could've explored deeper themes like Gru's relationship with his mother, the lack of afrection he had as a child and why he decided to become a villain. Instead they choose to make without substance only to make more money, fine I guess.. 🤷‍♂️

I love how right after people saying that Illumination "redeemed themselves" after making The Super Mario Bros. Movie for being a somewhat decent videogame movie (mostly because Nintento were breathing down their necks) they released the SIXTH Despicable Me/Minions and they were like "Oh yeah this is the animation studio that ruined animated movies worse than DreamWorks." It's the reason why I can't bring myself to hate "modern Disney and Pixar" because at least their animated movies feel like they're trying a bit more than Illumination just making "animated kids movies"... or "cinematic babysitters" as Doug says.
  • @Zikkar
This is honestly exactly what I expected from this movie.
