Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country following massive unrest, will stay in India for some more days as her purported plan to seek asylum in the UK hangs in balance, sources said.

Sheikh Hasina, whose 15-year reign ended dramatically after violent protests and widespread riots over the controversial quota system, landed at Hindon airbase near Delhi on Monday evening. According to sources, Hasina is likely to seek asylum in the UK as her sister, Sheikh Rehana, is a British citizen.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday said the government was in touch with the Indian community in violence-hit Bangladesh and asserted that it was monitoring the condition of minorities. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar said the border guarding forces have been directed to be "exceptionally alert" amid reports of rampant looting and rioting in Bangladesh.

The External Affairs Minister, who chaired an all-party meeting earlier in the day, said at very short notice Sheikh Hasina requested approval to come for the "moment" to India. However, he did not elaborate on the future plan of Hasina, who has been kept in a safe house near Delhi.

  • This lady was not ready to leave power and Bangladesh even yesterday. She was forced by the armies to leave asap as the protests weren’t stopping
  • @ozifasco3191
It didn’t seem like minority wanted her out. It seemed a vast majority wanted her out. I guess giving order to police force to fire on student protesters didn’t go well for her.

One of the reasons people were angry at her was that she never recognized her mistakes and apologised. She keeps saying the same "vocal minority/BNP-Jamat" phrase. Seems like she and her son never learnt their lesson.
