Robben Island Cape Town Tour

Political activist and lawyer Nelson Mandela was imprisoned on the island for 18 of the 27 years of his imprisonment before the fall of apartheid and introduction of full, multi-racial democracy. He was later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and was elected in 1994 as President of South Africa, becoming the country's first black president and serving one term from 1994–1999. In addition, the majority of prisoners were detained here for political reasons. Two other former inmates of Robben Island, in addition to Mandela, have been elected to the presidency since the late-1990s: Kgalema Motlanthe

My husband is also an ex-prisoner, truly celebrate the bravery these people did for the country.

I'm going to support this video because unfortunately i know it will not get as many views as the late night thirsts Zoe and that's a shame..growing up in Guyana Nelson Mandela was a huge hero for us and we would say "free Mandela" we even had tshirts and the energy was incredible... That was in the 80s only to see him become President ...people forget that his struggle was a similar struggle in the united states for the end of jim crow laws..different names.. Apartheid! Bless up!

I spent 120 months in California USP Victorville. When I got out in 2014 I visited Cape Town and went to robbin island. I think I met this guy.

Thank you for this, it brings back memories of those days. I watched this struggle from afar, with the wish that my fellow brothers and sisters would be free. Eventually I saw it, our people must never forget the sacrifice that so many made for us. Thanks again, well done.

Great content again! You really helped to bring home the true importance of the site. The prison guards intentionally blinded prisoners such as Mandela by making them nonsensically carry blocks of limestone from spot to spot in the bright sunlight.

Nice Zoe! Loving your SA content!!! love seeing this side of our travels
  • Definitely one of the best videos on this channel, the Tour Guide's story is heart-breaking and traumatic but this is a reminder of the Black experience and channels like this are doing something amazing by sharing this story
  • Keep bringing the knowledege of our people everywhere you go.👍🏾100%

  • @metaphysical4u
Things may have turned out different if the CIA didn't give the drop on Mandela's location to the SA government.
  • I've seen a lot of YouTube videos about Africa, this by far is the best video I have ever seen very informative thank you keep up the good work
