Homemade Donuts from a Bread Machine

Into the pan of your bread machine add the following as listed:
1 ¼ cup of lukewarm milk
¼ cup of sugar
1 ½ tsps fast rising yeast
1 beaten egg
¼ cup shortening
1 tsp salt
3 ½ cups flour

Set the machine on the dough cycle which will lead you through the mixing and first rise of the dough.

Once the machine has finished carefully may the dough on a clean surface and gently flatten it until it is about ¾ to 1 inch thick. Use your cutters to cut out the donut shapes. Allow the donuts to rise for an hour before cooking. When you are ready to cook bring 1 ½ quarts of oil to 350 degrees in a deep pot. Bring the temperature up slowly because it can get over heated very quickly. Once you have done it a few times you will know where the sweet spot is on the dial on your stove. Don’t overcrowd the pan as you lay the dough in. If the oil cools off to quickly then bring it back to 350 before you put the next batch in.

Cool on a rack or even paper towels before glazing.

To make the glaze mix together:
3 cups of powdered sugar
1/3 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla
Dip the donuts in the glaze and set aside to drip.

For some reason, I never thought of making doughnut dough with my bread maker. When I worked in a 'bake -off' bakery-deli, I used to chop up doughnut dough with the bench scraper, then mix the chunks with a small can of apple pie filling. I made that into patties the same way you form hamburger into patties, let them proof up, then fry them. Best Apple Fritters you've ever eaten!!!

  • Hi Colleen, I just want to say how much I love listening to your videos. I am totally blind and I appreciate the fact that you always say the amount of the ingredients and how to make the recipes step-by-step makes them very easy to follow. I am new to breadmaking, and I have listened to a lot of your bread videos. Hope to hear from you Hope things get better for your family.

We make all our breads and I just made cinnamon rolls. I'm so glad I learned how to use my bread maker in a more advanced way.
  • My Grandma would use a thumb sewing thimble to make her doughnut holes. Gee, I miss her and her doughnuts! Thanks for the memory!

Colleen I forgot to let you know I am out of powdered sugar but I make mine in my blender sometimes. I usually use 1 cup of sugar and 1 teaspoon of cornstarch. Blend it and make homemade powdered sugar . I’ve made my last batch with only sugar in my blender. Without the cornstarch and it works!!! Hope this helps somebody!!! ❤❤❤

If you reroll the dough, let it rise again for 20=30 minutes before cutting out again and they will be fluffy like the first ones. 💖💖👍👍💖💖

Thank you for sharing. I enjoy your videos. I have a bread machine that I enjoy but I have only used the dough setting one time making dinner rolls. I am 74 and grew up next door to a wonderful German neighbor who made all kinds of homemade breads and coffee cakes. I was little but I still remember her in the kitchen always busy. God bless you.
