We see first-hand the lengths that a school will go to to keep a student in mainstream education. From the top down, from the Head Teacher to Deputies, teachers and Inclusion workers, the staff at Thornhill pull together to get the very best from their pupils. One such student is 13 year old Jack, who is in Year 9 and full of contradictions. Angry but sensitive, threatening to lash out one minute hitting the high notes in the school choir the next. He's a boy with a big heart and sense of humour but a short memory when it comes to promises to turn around his behaviour. Despite his tendency to be disruptive in lessons, Jack as has an enduring love for History and is hoping to take it as a GCSE, something at risk if his behaviour doesn't improve. As Jack's behaviour continues to slide, the staff are seriously worried that, despite their best efforts, he may become Mr Mitchell's first ever permanent exclusion.

  • There's never bad kids, just bad parents, he has no dad and he said his grandma died recently, I'll bet you anything that's 70% of the reason he's always reacting to things like that.

My favourite quote of the whole "Educating" series is: "Oh dear... was she buried or cremated?"

To the question of whether too many resources were ploughed into one child here, I say this. They weren't just ploughed into one child at the expense of others. All children could have access - if they needed it. Clearly, they don't. And it's the idea of whether anything is done for a struggling child 'at the expense of other children' that is important here. I saw a school that supported this boy as much as they could whilst making sure any behaviour didn't negativity affect any other child there. Yay for this school. Lucky students all around, I say!

As a father of three I believe that, perhaps, being a father could have an impact on my children

That is such a soulful song and they beat any emotion out of it, inclusing the piano playing. Lol.

quite unfortunate that he acknowledges his bad behaviour at around 5 mins but can’t find a good way to change it, i understand though because of his situation and i have also struggled with behaviour in the past, poor boy.
