Epic Halibut Surf Fishing: 7 Legals in Remote California Kelp Forest

Published 2024-06-01
The most insane session we've ever had. We drove north to explore some pristine water with some of the most challenging structure we've ever fished. Seven legal halibut in a two hour window is by far my personal best, and I want to thank my brother for getting out there and filming the whole thing. He could have caught these fish himself, but instead he followed me around with a heavy camera in tough structure to get this footage.

My fishing gear was really put to the test, so I'd like to give these guys a shout-out:

Major Craft TripleCross TCX-962LSJ - Amazing rod with a sensitive tip and solid backbone, handled every fish with ease.

BioSpawn ExoSwim 4.8" - Durable, high quality swimbait.

Sufix 832 braid, 20 pound - Did not break off once pulling halis up to 30" through heavy structure.

00:16 Halibut with body wound
01:14 Halibut with crazy headshakes
02:29 Third legal halibut
02:52 Jumping halibut
04:15 Fifth legal halibut
05:02 Short halibut
05:20 Halibut heartbreak
06:27 30" halibut barely hooked
07:45 Seventh legal halibut

Such a cool video! I am happy to catch 1 short for the day lol. I might die of excitement if I caught 7 legal halibut in a session. I didn’t realize you can fish halibut in the kelp like this! Thanks for sharing!

This is great - it is like a forest but in the waters
  • Wow! What great catches!! There's not many extensive kelp beds left in CA. Sea otters vs, purple sea urchins!

You mind giving me an idea of where you are? Doesn’t have to be the exact place. I know this is northern Cali but which part? We never get action like this in SD.
