After a 27 year restoration , class 55 Deltic ,D9015 Tulyar is finally heard erupting back into life!!
After the first startup .a few days previously, this is the first public startup!
Sadly one engine was still needing further tweaking.
Also a look around the DPS (Deltic Preservation Society) shed at Barrowhill.
PLUS ... a couple of my photos of Tulyar from over 50 years ago!

  • Fantastic to see these old Thunderbirds, live and breath again! Just spent a week at Grosmont, class 31's, 37's and steam BR4's, a black five and an old living, breathing dragon built in 1924! I have nothing but sheer admiration and respect for those people who keep these beautiful machines alive and kicking!

Those engines are a work of art. We can’t lose trains like this, once they’re gone, they’re gone!

Used to lay in bed as a kid hearing Deltics pulling out of Doncaster and Vulcans scrambling from RAF Finningely, awesome sounds.
  • I'm glad I caught this. In 1984, on a visit to Britain, my train from Edinburgh Waverley to King's Cross stopped at Newcastle. I got out to see what I believed was a Deltic at the head. As I got there, some lads were taking a brass rubbing of the nameplate: King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. I had been following the Deltics after hearing one in a cassette tape I bought in Melbourne, and had been gripped by their rich sound. So I read what I could in the British railway magazines about their sad withdrawal. Well done, DPS for reviving Tulyar. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺
  • Well done to everyone who has painstakingly put this engine back together. I remember a few years back, Tulyar was just a skeleton.
  • I'm old enough to remember seeing Deltics on the ECML north of Newark when I was a lad. Seeing a Deltic at full chat is something I'll never forget 😊

I was born in 53, started train spotting wiv me big bruvver at Hornsey, He went on to be an electrician at Clarence Yard 34G. My love alway was and still is the Eastern Region both the GN and GE . I saw DP1 running and remember the absolutely stunning sound that twin Napier deltics produced. A lot of rime spent at KX that even in diesel days was exciting. Lost count of the Deltics I cabbed at KX, drivers were could, they even let you start them up and gave you a ride down the end of the platform. Fond memories of the gloom and smell of diesel on cold winter day. All gone, ALL GONE. I need a glass of single malt and some black and white photos for a nostalgia trip.. My brothers favourite loco was Crepello, I Loved Tulyar. What wasn't there to love about Finsbury Park racecourse.

Rode behind her several times in the early sixties on the ECML during the school holidays to see relatives on Tyneside. An exciting ride at a "ton" (and sometimes more) through the Vale of York in Mk 1 and even the odd few Gresley coaches. What memories. Beautiful, as original in green with no yellow warning panel and what appears to be the crew sound deadening board behind the cab seats!

Awesome as always Phil. She looks stunning in her new paint job. Sounds even better and clearly so well restored that so little "smoke" so soon after starting. Won't take long for the DPS crew to sort #2 power plant. What an incredible job they've done !!!! Thanks for sharing your video ❤
  • Good to see! Back in the day, when I was making quite a few trips between Newcastle and King's Cross, I travelled behind Tulyar several times and associated her with a smooth, punctual journey, so I used to look out for her. A long time ago now.

Magic visit that Phil. They are incredible machines. Still not seen one at full chat yet. Use. To see them at York . Super 👌 Paul

Excellent footage Phil, enjoyed watching this and great to see another Deltic coming back to life, brings back memories of travelling to London in the early 70s behind these beasts, cheers 👍
  • I remember ‘cabbing’ a Deltic the Summer of 1968 at Edinburgh Waverley. The drivers teasing me to try and open the pressure compartment front of cab (I think!). There’s a YouTube of a Deltic roaring its way out of the tunnel through Haymarket Station that’s the closest approximation to a mechanical dragon ever. Wonderful work these restoration folk. Best wishes from John, supporting main-line return of 71000 Duke of Gloucester. 🚂🐝

Great News the More Class 55 The better, Still today 2024 the best Loco's in the UK, I was lucky to be a spotter in the UK between 1974-1986 & managed to see the full 22 locos, most running on main lines between London Kings X - North of the Country Routes to as far as Edinburgh & on Haymarket depot. These Loco's are the Legends of British Rail & now the legends of there private owners, DPS we salute you Well Done.
