Over a single weekend in the Summer of 2021, the local population of Edmonson County, Kentucky was doubled by droves of "rednecks" descending on the area to celebrate five days of mud, music, & mayhem. They came for an event called "The Redneck Rave" - a music festival put on by country rapper, Justin Time, who bills it as the "biggest country party you'll ever go to." What festival goers didn't sign up for, however, was the absolute chaos that would ensue.

The Redneck Rave made international news for a throat slashing, log impalement, strangulation, amputated finger, and a slew of petty arrests & hospitalizations. Local law enforcement was completely overwhelmed, claiming festival organizers did little to coordinate with them, other than letting emergency responders onto the premises. In the wake of the media frenzy, Justin Time promises to redeem the Redneck Rave, offering family fun at their following Fall event.

In this episode of "Fringes", VICE's Erica Matson puts on her mud boots to attend the Fall Redneck Rave, exploring modern "Redneck Culture" to find out whether it's as innocent, safe, & wholesome as promised.

I'm really happy she wasnt judging them and she just had some drinks and enjoyed herself. A+

This is the style of Vice I fell in love with! She did a great job on this story!
  • @logicone5667
This is the Vice I like, no biased, fun, and intelligent journalism on something you'd never hear about on Fox or MSNBC and if you did it would be politically spun. Great job Vice! 👏
  • @timtebow41
No joke, this was refreshing to watch. She was not biased and actually went in with an open mind and it seemed pretty cool! Great Job VICE, Justin, Erica and the myth the legend DAN!
  • @foskco87
This actually seemed like unbiased objective journalism. She didn't try and give it a certain spin. She just tried to find out what it was all about, and tried to get some context where there were criticisms of the rave. I consider myself a left leaning person, and not someone who would generally attend something like this but regardless I like seeing things in an objective light. Not to sound like a dick but I was getting pretty tired of seeing them send the dorkiest most out of place mega-hipster they can find out to cover these types of stories.

I like how the cops keep describing what great time the redneck rave is.
  • @Justin-vq9gl
It’s rare to see a independent vice journalist not being biased for once. Talk about a great episode.

Serious props to Erica for keeping it together through SO MANY SHOTS. Including homemade moonshine?! Like jfc I'd be passed out in a ditch somewhere.

More of this host! Great story, objective reporting, and she held her booze really well. I'm into this new (old) direction.

At first I was like "this is not a rave" , but when I saw how they have this big welcoming community and everyone is accepted, I realized that's what they mean by rave. Because in the normal rave community that's what it is. A place where everyone can feel accepted and just have a good time.

As a born & raised Texas girl, who’s been to plenty of muddin’ events (shout out “Mud Hustlers” and “Rednecks with Paychecks”! Lol), I appreciate the non-biased reporting on this. Yes, people break very expensive “toys”, you lose stuff (think new iPhone in mud😩), people get hurt (my sister’s nickname was “Flipper” for always flipping their ATV when she drove..her nickname was in letters upside down on the back of her shirt lol)…but, man oh man is it FUN!!! Lol Unless you’re a grown adult who’s spent a weekend camping out with friends and playing in mud, don’t knock it. 😂🎉❤
  • 11:15 he ain’t lying. One night we were broke down in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma then some rednecks stopped and helped us. He said “We got gas, we got oil…hell, we even have a spare engine in the back!” They were on their way to go harpoon fishing for catfish or something. Great guys!

12:12 THAT'S ME ON STAGE!! WOO!! I'M ON VICE!!! Now, let me tell you something about the Rave: I am not a full-blown redneck, not even close. These people took me in, gave me a platform, and have been nothing -- NOTHING -- but kind to me. Not just Justin and the crew, but everyone who came. Me, in my hippie tie-dye, with my songs about mental health and life in general not pertaining to trucks, gets to fit in with a crowd I never thought I would. Just wanted to drop in and say that if you wanna fit in, come to a Redneck Rave. Much love, Bubba

I watched two fringes. This one and the other about some wellness retreat in Jordan. The guy that ran give off very culty vibes. This one, the guy that runs it seems like he actually wants the people that come to have a good time. One caters to rich people, the other poor people. hmm, I wonder what the difference is lol.
  • @tja9212
this is like the real burning man but with rednecks, love it
