World Chess Champion Ding Liren returns for the 86th edition of the Tata Steel Masters, a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 13-28 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands.

The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. A tie for first place will be decided by two blitz (3+2) games. If still tied, the players keep playing single "sudden death" games where White gets 2.5 minutes and Black 3 minutes until one side wins. The monetary prizes will be shared evenly. Nodirbek is such a tactical beast with more solid play than Alireza. This was top-notch calculation and he found his way out of the tactical forest while leaving Ju Wenjun behind.

Well worth remembering. The two leaders of the tournament, Nordirbek and Gukesh are 19 and 17 respectively. Remarkable young talents, both of them (and don't ignore how young Alireza and Pragg, both doing reasonably well in this tournament, are either). It augurs very well for the future of chess.
  • Nodirbek should've been in candidates. He's literally an executioner like Alekhine
  • Nodirbek doesn't look like any chess player from history. His style, attitude is entirely different. He will create history as Nodirbek Abdusattorov.
  • I waited so long for a player to be granted a place in the Morphy-head Club and Nodirbek did. Absolutely stunning.

This game was actually pretty easy to calculate: captures, captures, captures, and after that, maybe captures, captures.

regardless of the result, i think ju deserves a lot of congrats competing agains her formidable male counterparts. and congrats to nodirbeg who consolidated his leadership in the tournement. looks like it's going to be a neck and neck with gukesh. very exciting.

Very deep calculations, Nodi reminds me of Karpov, he strangles his opponents like python, he is positionally most potent of youngsters

This is one of those games that makes you understand why a top player can be in time trouble after move 20 or so....there's so many calculations that it boggles my mind that a person can do it.
  • @DarkKnightIndia
What a game!! And What an explanation with all those extra lines, brother Antonio❤️
  • Nodirbek took Anish on a nice c4 forest trail in the Petroff earlier, now he takes Ju Wenjun on a similar tour of c4 in the Italian. This move in the opening is paying him with interest when it matters.

thank you for making my head spin with this well deserved Morphy-head game!

Qa2 was such a natural move, I don't think any human would even consider dxe4. Beautifully played by Nodirbek.
