In tonight's top story: The scope of the damage from the Jasper, Alta., wildfire is much clearer now, as Parks Canada says 358 structures in the town have been destroyed — about 30 per cent of the townsite. As Heather Yourex-West explains, most critical infrastructure has survived the fire.

The Olympic games officially got underway Friday in Paris, with an opening ceremony that was the first of its kind. Rather than the usual parade of nations unfolding inside a single major venue, athletes from around the world sailed through the city on the Seine River. Crystal Goomansingh is in Paris with more.

Canada's chance to shine on the opening day of the Olympic games was dimmed by scandal, rocking Canada Soccer. The head coach of the women's team was sent home from the Paris Olympics late Thursday over allegations of spying on other teams with drones. As Eric Sorensen reports, Canada Soccer's CEO is calling out a "systemic ethical shortcoming" in the organization.

The Crown dishonourably breached the Robinson Treaties and must negotiate a settlement with First Nations within six months, the Supreme Court of Canada has ruled. In a ruling Friday, the Supreme Court said the Ontario and Canadian governments had a mandatory obligation to raise that amount when economic circumstances warranted. David Akin has more.

Plus, a missing cat has been reunited with its family, eight years after she was first lost. Indie the cat was found a very long way from home, across at least one bridge. Matilda Cerone visited Indie's family, to see how she's adjusting to being back home after all these years.

  • @marcberlin.
Don t give it to the red cross if you want the people of Jasper to have it
  • @JimLambrick
And as usual the MSM ignores the real question. Why wasn't the fuels reduction work done around this town years ago? Not just Jasper, but dozens of other towns. Lots of talk and lots of urban based 'xspurts' and endless studies but nothing actually happening on the ground.

Our parents spent their honeymoon in Jasper. Went by train from Montreal. Stayed at the Jasper Park Lodge. This tradition will not end. Jasperites are tough mountain people. All our hearts go out to them, be strong!
  • These folks will rebound because westerners are super generous. And life is irreplaceable. Possessions are.

I feel so awful for those Canadians out West who are losing homes and/or businesses to rampant fires. I know the Canadian Red Cross will do all they can to help, and we Canadians not affected must step up to support that effort.

I feel so much empathy for Jasperites ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

if only that cat could talk, imagine the stories it would tell from its 8 year adventure. and do you think someone kept it indoors for 8 years and only let it go now?

In California homes must resist earthquakes, in Florida hurricanes, and in China cities build against floods. In Canada we build houses out of wood in forest fire zones, allow ember-trapping wooden decks, lack bylaws preventing combustible materials being stored against structures, or distances trees must be from homes. Many communities in the US build municipal golf courses as fire breaks and utilize their underground water storage if there's a fire. Not in Canada. When wildfire fighters hastelly install structural protections, it's basically sprinklers on rooftops. Anyone could do it in advance from home hardware, but nope. Eventually insurance companies will force change because we're too stupid to protect ourselves.
  • When people are living this far out from the ocean people should have sprinkler system in their houses and on top of them.
