Interesting that the Historian Tacitus was held in such a high regard that an emperor might have used him as a source of legitimacy. Keyword is "might"

Great one! Hopefully we are not going to wait long for Probus 😁

0:40 The fact that after soooo many generals tried to take the purple before emperor Aurelian after hearing of the current emperors death then going to this decision just shows how well loved and respected he was by his military men!

Ready to see Probus, who arguably was nearly as good as Aurelianus.

Great work! I hope you guys don't stop at Romulus Augustulus. Go all the way to Constantine XI!

Thank you SPQR! Have you ever thought of making a video cooperation with Schwerpunkt? The guy rocks hard as far Roman history is concerned
  • Another fantastic video. The good new is that you don't have to rely on the Historia Augusta for much longer. The senatorial resurgence is somewhat suspect as it is only in two sources both of which were probably senators: Aurelius Victor and the HA. Eutropius, who was likely using the same master source as them does not mention it. I suspect that Zosimus, who used Dexippus is probably correct in thinking that it was the army that was the deciding factor in selecting Tacitus.
