Colorado: One Day in Durango | Riding the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad & MORE!

For state #40 on our journey to all 50 states in 2021, we made our way to Colorado! For our time in the Centennial State, we spent one day in the town of Durango where we took a ride on the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (Cascade Canyon Express), had some excellent burgers and brews at Steamworks Brewing Company, explored the quaint downtown (including Old Colorado Vintage and Cream Bean Berry Artisan Ice Cream), and made a visit to the Durango & Silverton Railroad Museum before calling it a day!

Check out our “One Day in Durango, CO” travel itinerary for tips on planning your visit!

I spent the night at the campground by the Durango-Silverton depot while on a bike trip from North Carolina to Western Wyoming in 1984, and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone who might be on a similar trip, it was great! Seeya! ☮✌

I was in Durango and rode the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad a week before y’all did! I did the same 5 hour Cascade Canyon ride, that blue water is soo pretty!

I grew up in Durango and moved to Albuquerque NM 7 years ago. I've enjoyed both your videos on Durango and Albuquerque! I love both places.

Nat, it's really hard even walking in that high altitude so kudos to you & Matt for making it back to the train without passing out! You two are awesome. 🤗❤👍👍

You too, have a beautiful passion for life. And it shows in your videos. Thank you for putting a smile on my face.
  • We did the entire trip in 1986. The train passes over the deepest gourge with a train trestle in America which is something special to see and there is a miner’s village at the end with a good gift shop. Sometimes it’s better to take your time in a place than just rush through in a day. Colorado in the summer is wonderful

  • What an awesome trip video with amazing views and fantastic train ride! The scenery on that train ride looks incredible. I had a super fun one day trip experience because of you. 🍻👍👍😊
  • Another great video y'all! Hope y'all sang 🎶 Rocky Mountain hiiiiiiiigh Colorado 🎶 like the whole time you were there! I would've. Almost missing the train, classic! Y'all are a trip lol. As always the food looked delicious, and the views where awesome. I'm sad there's only 10 videos left, but I hope y'all have plans for more content when this series is over! As always stay safe and many blessings!

  • One adventure I really liked was went you both went to Idaho and you went rafting. That was so much fun. I want to do that if and when my family ever visits there. Thank you for sharing your awesome videos.

This brings back nice memories of when my sister, I, and a coworker vacationed in Durango at the Purgatory ski lodge in August 2016. I had first ordered open gondola seating, but after reading some reviews on why that was not a good idea (soot, embers, temperature uncertainty, etc.) I changed to closed train seating. We took the roundtrip option to Silverton, the views were amazing and showcased how beautiful Colorado is. It was a spectacular fall day, but occasionally opening the window made me realize my wise decision to ride in the car. Soot, smoke, and sparking embers all met me in puffs as the wind directed them through the window. However, I would suggest this excursion to everyone, if you have respiratory trouble just don't select gondola tickets. Durango is a beautiful place to live and the people are so nice there.
