In this illustrated episode of Research & Wonder we talk about Half Dome and answer questions like: What is Half Dome made of? How'd it get there? How tall is Half Dome? and Who was the first person to climb Half Dome. This illustrated guide contains over 20 original illustrations hand drawn by Aaron Robbins in March of 2016. This is a fun video for families heading to Yosemite or any one who loves the great outdoors and National Park history. Hope you enjoy.

Nice video! Yosemite in general and Half Dome in particular was much easier to visit when I first spent a month there in 1981: No permits, no waiting in line, just hike up to the shoulder (sleep under a log), climb the classic Robbins route (which was amazing, I'm just glad I wasn't anywhere near when a significant part of it came down some years ago!), and then hike back down and eat a bucket of ice cream. :-) We only saw one other party on the route, in the Zig-Zags just above Big Sandy and just below Thank God Ledge (which is totally amazing!), today both Half Dome and El Cap have long lines of people who want to climb the most popular routes. :-(

Great video. Great call out on The Visor vs. The Diving Board.
  • @snakedike
Thanks for pointing out the difference between the visor and the diving board. So tired of arguing about that.

Great vid! One of those bucket list trips. Just need a few spare thousand for a west coast trip, lodging, rental car, meals, incidentals ;-)

    Awesome video and illustrations!
  • Forgive me for being Captain Obvious but if I'm not mistaken The North Face's logo is modeled after Half Dome, similar to how Quiksilver's logo is modeled after Hokusai's Great Wave off Kanagawa

Thanks Aaron! Do you do your own animations, or if not, whom do you hire?
  • The name of this monolith begs the question…”What happened to the OTHER half?”

I would say the great flood had something to do with this.
