There's two objects in the woods that I found on Google Maps. They are located off an old railroad bed and I want to find out if they're still there and hopefully figure out why they're there.

More random items found in the woods thanks to Google Maps. Do you think the second item held water?
  • @markdeprimo2860
Jay, I would agree with the upper foundation being a water collection basin for filling locomotives. If you look at the 1939 photo, there is a round object off of the north corner of the lower foundation. Possibly a water tower that was filled from the basin? Another great find!!!
  • My guess is the upper structure was a reservoir and the lower possibly a valve house to provide water for the rail line. The PRR seemed to favor round stone pools and round valve houses but usually a similar relationship to each other and the line they served

I wonder if it was a retention pond for a gravity fed mill below the hill?

That hunk of steel looks like a heat exchanger for an old furnace.

That rusty metal piece reminds me of the heat exchanger you see in old gas floor furnaces. You know, what is just below the grate set at floor level.

Your channel showed up in my recommended list, and I'm so glad it did! This was an awesome adventure. My son and I go on a lot of road trips, and we usually take the long way through towns instead of the Interstate because we love to find places randomly. It always drives me crazy when we pass by a place that looks very old and has long been abandoned, and I can't figure out what it could've been, so I can imagine that not knowing what these two objects once were probably drove you nuts, too 😂 Really great channel, though. I will check out more of your videos.

Great finds and I especially liked the exercise class in the pool lol. Your camera looked great but all your videos look great. Have a great weekend JP, see you next week. 🤗

"...chocolate pellets. Remember, kids, if you find those, don't eat them. They're not Milk Duds."😆😂🤣Loved this adventure! You found both targets! And some interesting things along the way, too! Lots of pretty Nature's carpet, a spring, a creek bed with lovely sounds of flowing water...very Zen place. Your camera that follows you and your wireless microphone both work exceptionally well. I bet this area is gorgeous in the spring and fall. Thanks for bringing us along!💙

Water sources were critical for the railroad for the steam engines Some of the locomotives were designed to draw water out of creeks and storage reservoirs I remember seeing tanks along side the mountains where the tracks were up in rural VT, NH, NY and Canada They had natural little creeks and they built storage tanks of wood that the creek filled and overflowed out of
  • Glad you were able to find the structures .....so very interesting ( and mysterious ) .. The picture and audio quality of your camera was great and love how it followed you as you moved about ...great feature . Thank you for taking us along on another google map search . 👍💙

I think that the reservoir and filling station sitting on natural gradient makes the most sence
  • Awesome Google Maps adventure JP! Seeing the old airel photos and the Google maps photos in comparison is awesome! Reminds me of the old water reservoirs that are in my area! Thanks for bringing us along for another great adventure!👍

Really relaxing and peaceful journey through the woods. The little spring well was an awesome find and it had some beautiful nature's carpet on it too. The little manmade creek bed and waterfall was also very cool, always love the sound of the water. It was great that you found the structures you were looking for and yes, I am thinking the second structure was used for water too, like a reserve or reservoir or like you said, a pool especially seeing the pipe. It would have been a huge pool for sure and looking at the map, it sure looked like a pool. Love the workout activity! 😂I can't think of what the movie was, but I feel like I should know what it is. lol Awesome google maps finds and what a great video JP, thank you! 💙

My guess would be a large farmhouse with a basement/cellar and a large barn with sub-level. A lot of barns were built like that decades ago. Good find.

I think the smaller object was the water tank. It was an old wooden water tank, and you are seeing the roof in the old photos. The larger upper structure was probably a reservoir that filled the tank below. Then maybe somewhere down the hill by the tracks, there would be just a stand alone water column that was fed from the tank on the hill. Or its possible the reservoir fed straight to a water column, and the smaller building was a coaling station, with a roof to keep the coal dry. Which in your old photo, I didn't see a lot of signs of how coal would have been brought in and moved for a coaling station, so sort of doubtful it was that. They did make square water tanks, even though they are a bit rare to find.
