If you're reading this, generation retro ruined my life

Hey - just an important reminder that you should NOT go after the creator, harass them, spam their levels with hate, etc. This should be common sense. Generation Retro is a VERY creative level with lots of fun theming, but the creator just didn't do a very good job at building it in the editor. It's a random custom level that a kid dreamt up and worked hard on, and usually I would never hate on someone for doing that. HOWEVER - this level is in a Gauntlet, which means millions of players are forced to play it. This basically means that the level is "official", and for that reason I wanted to dive deep into it and pinpoint why it's so hated - so new creators don't make the same mistakes. It's a charming level on its own, but an absolute trainwreck inside a Gauntlet. I don't hate the creator and I don't hate the idea of the level. I hate the fact that RobTop scooped up a random 13 year old's level for a Gauntlet that will be played by a massive audience. Think of this video as "Why this level shouldn't be in a Gauntlet", and NOT "Why this level shouldn't exist".

I love the character developpement : The red alien : "NOOOOO !" The decoy alien : "NOOOOO !" The friendly alien : "NOOOOO !" The player : "NOOOOO !" You after playing the level : "NOOOOO !"
  • @kthelemon
I have a theory that "jajaja" is not laughing in spanish, the red alien is actually trying to ask you if you're jar jar binks, his long lost brother at birth. Sadly, because of his immense stutter, he can't bring himself to do it and he instead starts trying to kill you because he got frustrated
  • @katraena5225
10:43 I theorize that perhaps maybe the reason the alien yells "NO!" is that the blind jump just before is actually a trap set up by him, and he is actually upset that you survived his trap

6:21 You know, if you think about it, the green orb has technically existed since the game was first released, as creators could have easily created the mechanic by combining a yellow orb with a gravity portal, which was done very often in pre-2.0 levels. Therefore, Arathhsa could have started building the level in 1.9, but that first click would have initially been a yellow orb combined with a gravity portal, and then they changed it to a regular green orb after 2.0 came out.

Never thought I’d see a grown man bully a 7 and a half year old video game level probably made by a middle schooler for half an hour
  • @MrNoob76
Fun Fact: The insert coin is not for aesthetic purposes, when the text pops up it's the level stealing money from the player's bank account.

"jajajaja you have not win! you... DIED!!!!" peak cinema & peak gaming tbh
  • @koopatroopa7968
I have a feeling that “You are not win” was inspired by grammatically incorrect phrases from older games, e.g. the iconic “All your base are belong to us” from Zero Wing’s opening cutscene.

You asked for theories, so here’s mine: The red and blue aliens are brothers, and the blue one was always the better kid and their parents’ favorite. As expected, the red alien was jealous, so he kidnapped his own brother and brought him to his own part of the galaxy. The green aliens are his workers and are supposed to make sure the blue alien never escapes. He allows visitors so nobody is suspicious of him hiding something. That’s why he was all nice at the beginning of the level. But when the key is collected, it opens up the area where the blue alien was trapped. That’s why the red alien says “NOOO!!!” The red alien begins to search for the blue alien, and sends his highest ranked worker, the other red alien in the first boss fight, to take care of you. The blue alien knows that you’re in trouble, so he goes to save you. After the first boss is defeated, the red alien decides that he needs to take care of you first. That leads to the “level final.” The red alien then destroys the blue alien, which leads to you getting revenge for him once and for all, as you blast the red alien. I really just spent ten minutes of my life writing a story on a YouTube comment. Welp

If the biggest problem with generation retro is the fact that it is in a gauntlet, then it's technically robtops fault
  • @kronost06
Extra fact for you @GDColon. When remaking the level, I saw that the dude didn't use a single Alpha trigger (there is only one that makes the mini portals, the first speed portal invisible). The key, the title and the red alien animations are all controlled by color triggers, switching from black (blending) to green/red (blending), which explains whyost of the background was black.
  • Seriously guys, stop blaming ArathhSA for making the level. Blame RobTop for adding the level into the Poison Gauntlet in the first place.
  • @MoldyGD
Colon is the only person on this planet to even consider making a half hour long analysis on Generation Retro, let alone go through with it. And I didn’t know we needed that until now
  • @spicycorn4
I would never think a 27 minute video would be committed to complaining about a bad 2.0 level.
  • @pac-er390
The red alien was trying to save us, he knew a virus was in the game, he wanted to stop you from getting corrupted.
  • @Jesoysauce
Watching Colon violently screaming over a level made in 2015 in a 2d cube game is just filling my heart with joy.
  • @JBRedux
I think the issue with Scarlet Surge is that if you can't beat it in your first few attempts, it just becomes tedious. Crashing in the last 25% makes you REALLY not feel like playing the entire damn thing again.
  • @ItzWaterWheelz
It honestly felt like a passion project that accidentally got into the main game
