Why Better Tires are Faster than More Power

Everyone wants more power, but there's a lot you can do to your car before cranking up the boost or boring out cylinders. We’ve talked about weight versus power, and we've talked about suspension versus power; but there's one thing that can get you more of a performance advantage than all of those. It's the stuff that actually touches the ground: your wheel and tire setup. So what makes a good wheel? What makes a good tire? And why the heck do they mix metric and imperial so much?! Today on B2B, let's see if we can get to grips with mechanical grip.

Dude basically made donut buy his upgrades, respect

A 4 second gain?! Better than I expected, but it's a goes to show how much you can improve with a good driver and the right set-up. It's always great to see the Catfish getting love Jeremiah, I got a '97 myself, more Camaro content!
  • @WearingGoldluck
I’m glad that B2B has basically become the successor to Science Garage, I still love learning about some of the more complex dynamics of a car that can be difficult to learn on your own.
  • Miatas would come to the local autocross events and literally change their tires to autocross tires and beat the crap outta corvettes, supras, 300zs, m3s. It is not always about power. Great video Jerry!

Forgot where I heard it from, but I remember an experienced tuner say that if you're gonna mod out your car for performance, always start from the outside going in. As in the progress line should be wheels and tires, then brakes, then suspension, then intake, then exhaust, then finally the engine. It kinda annoys me so many wannabe racers always do it the other way around
  • @PostalTwinkie
Better tires won a lot of drag races for me on the weekends in Highschool, even against kids with "modified" cars. Nothing was high powered so getting off the line and not spinning was king! The most expensive and impactful modification I ever did to my first real car ended up being the tires. P.S. Don't street race kids, we were idiots back then, you are smarter than us!
  • @jedaniels94
I’d love to see a donut series where someone from the team travels the US testing race tracks, let us know which ones are good, where they are, how much they cost, what safety requirements we need to know. Could be a solid show and encourage more of us to get more seat time.
  • @ampedex
So many people ask what's the easiest to go faster, I always say tires, it's amazing how much faster you can be when not using long longs
  • @CapnFlappyJaw42
My friends always wondered why I always took a podium position in Forza whenever we used to play all the time, even though I had a "slower" car. It took them too long to learn that power means nothing without proper grip. I always buy the tire and suspension upgrades before adding power so I know I dont have to worry about losing traction. This is also why once I get my RX7 running again, I'm focusing on the suspension and tires first before slapping a turbo on, even though everyone I talk to want me to turbo it asap lmao
  • @martsmarts
Proper upgrade steps: 1. Suspension 2. Wheels and Tires 3. Chassis stiffening (bushings, strut bars, etc.) 4. Weight reduction 5. Intake and exhaust 6. Engine inductio 7. Engine internals and cooling Awesome episode!
  • @OCDRex11
Best mod I have ever done in all my (many) years of modding - tires. Tracking a car for years without proper tires was not only wrong but it taught me to learn new ways to drive. When I finally ponied up for a set of RE-71's my car was 100 percent a different machine. I had to re-learn the car so much so that it became too fast. Funny to say that but it was too fast for autocross. Tires should have been first and brakes second.
  • @scottmeyer3442
A motorcycle tire episode would also be pretty awesome. Tire shapes on motorcycles have a huge, huge impact. Lots of content there to go over. As always, love the videos. Thank you donut.
  • @26Mar.
We are doing tire now in my high school mechanics class. This is perfect timing!
  • This is neat. I come from an offroad background- mostly crawling- and a funny thing about that is if you have too wide of a tire, you can actually lose grip over rocks. You get less pressure per square inch which obviously affects how a rig handles. To me it's neat to see this play out in the track world
  • @TechDove
I have Falken Azenis RT660's on my car and the difference between these and standard street tires is astounding
  • @illPAPA_dill
Been wondering when this episode was coming, definitely an interesting subject matter.
  • @joepf8801
Just bought my first car yesterday. A 1985 c4 Corvette inspired by donut media. It took me all year, but I've finally reached my goal to have the perfect first car
  • to make your car faster, I've been taught that what you need to upgrade is, in order : 1/ tires 2/ brakes 3/ suspension 4/ weight & stiffness (rollcage and all) 5/ aero if possible or necessary 6/ power I actually never got to the "power" part of any car I owned XD
