The teacher was trying to demonstrate how centripetal force would keep the water in the cups, which is how gravity works. And the cups and water in the middle did stay on. What the teacher forgot to account for was the initial momentum from the swing that sent the outer cups flying. That demonstration works best with a single bucket.

For all the cups to stay on, the board should have the same curvature as the circumferential path created by that length of string, like this (( . I think the cups just weren’t stuck properly. The test was not that the cups would stay put without support, but that the water in them would largely remain in them.
