I handed the world to my players and they thought it was silly that I was overpowering them until they learned that the big bad's OFFICIAL stat block comes with an ability that can both negate and/or make magic items around him "unreliable". It was fun to spook the paladin when his sentient sword went silent for a while, only to suddenly come back screaming in terror once the BBEG had departed.
