I saw a cardiologist yesterday and he asked me, with a wrinkled brow, why I supplement Magnesium. Like, I really needed a good reason to do that... I get the feeling that he didn't approve of any supplementation. And then he actually told me that if he recommends magnesium to his patients, that he tells them to use magnesium oxide - the cheapest, least absorbed version you can take. Of course I didn't say anything, I didn't think he would be appreciative of me asking about it. So I think I'll just keep my supplementation list to myself from now on, no MD I've ever seen knows or cares enough about vitamins, minerals, amino acids or herbs to have a conversation about them.

I'm 67 years old and I've been taking D3/K2 together with a multi-vitamin for about six months. I am also on a Keto diet and doing some weight training. I've lost about 20lbs and feel great. I used to have a lot of arthritis pain in my hands but now it is all but gone. The same is true for my lower back pain.

This doctor knows way more about nutrition than 99% of the doctors practicing today. Most of them know about procedures and pharmaceuticals, but that's about it.
  • My wife developed osteoporosis after taking an estrogen blocker for post-cancer ā€œtreatmentā€. She started supplementing with K2, D & a little calcium, and regular walks on the treadmill and REVERSED her bone loss, and now only has mild osteopenia.
  • I had a terrible problem with kidney stones, started taking K-2 and D-3 and it STOPPED those stones completely šŸ™

I was just weak and having heart pain back in 2011, and my Vit D was at 13! I was advised to get more Sun and take 2,000 IUs. Over a few years of me intermittently taking vit D, levels built up to about 25. I could feel when I didn't have enough because I was just lagging. But I still had extreme fatigue complicated by Lyme Disease Encephalopathy, and was found to have Osteoporosis.I started feeling so much better when I was advised by a Naturopath/MD to take 10,000/day and then learned of K2, and after a couple years of 10,000IU D, and only a month of K2 my blood levels are up to 70 D. I feel so much better, incredible! Also I've cut unhealthy carbs and increased protein and finding walking exercise and mild resistence helping to build muscle. At 68yo, grateful to get some of this quality of life and health back!
  • I had tremendous abdominal pain and angina in January. I did a lot of research and changed my ways. I went on a "clean" diet avoiding fat, sugar, processed food, artificial sugar, and diet drinks. I drink water now and have one beer per week. My doctor put me on a low dose of a statin and low dose blood pressure pill. I am also taking a vitamin K2 plus D3 gummy once per day. In January, I thought I was dying. Today, I feel like the clock has been turned back 20 years. All my blood numbers are normal, the angina went away, and I have had no abdominal pain, which I believe was the result of a fatty liver and too much artificial sweetener. I think the fatty liver is gone. It was the result of diet not alcohol. It took about two months to clear that out. My wife and I walk 2 miles a day. Tomorrow I am going to ride my 27 speed road bike 15 miles. I am 74 and weigh about 160. I should probably weigh 150. I am now expecting and hoping to live to be 90.

I roll my eyes whenever I see the advice to ā€œconsult your doctorā€ regarding supplements, exercise, etc. I went through a dozen GPs & specialists before someone discovered I had a severe, long-term B12 deficiency. And quite frankly the majority had zero concern for a post-menopausal female. The assumption was that ā€œwomen of my ageā€ are stupid hypochondriacs who simply need to accept our pain and debility. Iā€™m a retired army officer- not terribly compliant with that perspective. Iā€™ve come to rely on docs for emergencies & routine testing only. Otherwise, heal thyself. And I never share my self treatment info.

I was diagnosed with osteoporosis at the age of 37. At my own insistence, I saw an endocrinologist who tested me and found I was significantly deficient in Vit. D. I was started on 50K weekly (orally) for 12 weeks and my levels went up to "normal". After a few months off supplementation, my level dropped to pretreatment reading. I was again placed on 50K once a week for 12 weeks. My level went up, but post-treatment my level dropped again. Through trial and error, I have discovered that taking 5,000 IU daily keeps my level around 50. However, I also discovered that if I took 10,000 IU daily I felt better. While taking that much my blood level rose to > 100 and my doctor wanted me to back off out of fear of toxicity. Now I wonder if maybe I should listen more to my body.

A medical video with no mention of cholesterol or saturated fat! A very good video.
  • @Compertz
I think you have done a good job of connecting the dots. I've been in this arena for a while now but you have given me a better perspective about amounts and possible issues. Thank you.
  • @mikeschafer2474
My wife and I take 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 and 100 mcg K2 Daily. We live in Michigan and itā€™s hard to get enough vitamin D through from the sun. We also take magnesium I take 300 mg a day broke up into 150 in the morning and 150 in the evening and she takes 150 mg once a day in the evening. 10,000 IU of vitamin D is only 250 mcg. I think they try to confuse people when they switch between milligrams micrograms and international units. I probably get around 400 mg of magnesium, because I also eat almonds and pumpkin seeds and salads every day. If youā€™re someone that is not currently taking magnesium and want to start just make sure you start out slowly I take a product called Remag magnesium normal serving is a half a teaspoon, and when I first started out, I started out with an eighth of a teaspoon worked up to a quarter and then a half overtime. Magnesium changed my life as far as muscle, pain and muscle soreness and vitamin D3 and K2 really boosted my immune system.
  • Absolutely outstanding and comprehensive video!! Thank you so much for creating this highly educational video. So many people suffering from various ailments due to lack of knowledge! My mother went to a Cardiologist and she was telling him what supplement she was taking and that it seemed to be helping her ,he asked her why did you come to see me then ,so she told him she was their for a second opinion. He didnā€™t like that he had his back turned and his nurse said I guess she told you Doc nurse said why are you laughing he didnā€™t want my mother to see his reaction. My mother never went back to him .
  • @Whistlewalk
A really useful video! Thank you. I started taking a D3K2 supplement after my second heart attack - it just felt like the right thing to do bolstered by some vague YouTubes (this one is so much better!) that indicated that it was a good idea based on some of the meds I'm taking. But now I get it. So again, thank you!
  • @picklefoot
I just turned 47. I don't drink, I smoke pot and I'm quitting cigarettes, slowly. I drank heavily for years, quit in 2010. I smoked speed when I was younger. I used to think I ate healthy. Boy was I wrong. I will have to change everything if I want to live healthy
  • @kelkilkat
This video is amazingly comprehensive and full of information about vitamins D3, K2 + magnesium...and then some..very interesting and thorough, great video
  • This was very in-depth, it is very important to realize these things work togetherā€¦ I was wondering why vitamin A was not mentioned as one of the players in the bone building process with vitamin D magnesium and vitamin K2. maybe it wasnā€™t mentioned in the studies, but it is extremely important player in the team. during Covid, I spent about six months taking between five and 15,000 units of Vitamin D3 each day, along with zinc and vitamin C. After about three months, my bones really started to hurt and ache and I didnā€™t associate it with high vitamin D but this is one of the side effects. I live in the Pacific Northwest, so I donā€™t think overdosing wouldā€™ve really been possible but getting too much can really affect your bones negativelyā€¦ and zinc should never be taken without its counterpart copper in the right ratio. I donā€™t see anyone highlighting that fact. One pretty safe and simple way to get the minerals is through ionic trace mineral drops added to your water itā€™s pretty cheap too. But at the end of the day all of our bodies processes things differently, itā€™s really hard to tell a whole population what to do and advising testing is a good idea. Not all doctors receive our requests very well when we try to be proactive with our healthcare.ā€¦ thank you for providing a base of education for the masses :-)
