King Neptune went from good guy to the bad guy who stole everything from Poseidon to the guy who prevented a catastrophe against the actual Atlantis. That was some emotional rollercoaster right there.

Fun fact: when Spongebob and his friends go to Atlantis (the one with the oldest bubble) that one guy who greets them and gives them a tour is actually voiced by none other than David Bowie.

Maybe it isn’t two separate timelines but a single one. The Atlanteans brought Neptune to power to depose Poseidon and take his god powers away, (like he did after briefly making SpongeBob a god), which afterwards the now mortal Poseidon founded the lost city of Atlantic City using his following that still thought of him as the god of the seas.
