The instant recoil at hearing Oikawa's voice is 10/10 content
  • I can't remember if you've already been informed so I'll say it just in case. The early episodes were heavily censored do to the time slot the show aired. A lot more blood was in the manga. The biggest example was Hisoka cutting the guys arms off instead of randomly turning them into flower petals.

Just for the language pun: the word Hisoka means "sneaky / secretive", so the original title is "Hisoka x wa x Hisoka." Har har. 2:40 Right. There's this trope in Japanese fiction from the martial arts where "sakki" (殺気, "intent to kill") is a particularly strong emotion that gives off its own signal, and apparently, true masters of martial arts are able to detect and therefore respond to it almost as a sixth sense. In S3 of Demon Slayer, Muichiro wakes Tanjiro up by blocking his nose and says that Tanjiro clearly isn't trained well if he could sneak up that close without his detection, but Tanjiro says he'd definitely have woken up if he detected 'sakki,' and so on.

Also, on your note about HxH’s tone, that’s part of why I like this show! I find characters’ desensitization to death particularly interesting, especially as someone who holds it in high regard. Life is very important to me, and people should always have the choice on what to do with it, not have it or the choice of what to do with it stolen from them imo. This series speaks on those views, like the combatants who faced Hisoka. One tried to run away, clearly fearing for his life and wanting to protect it, but by entering the hunter exam and further challenging Hisoka, one could argue he had accepted that death was a likely outcome, and Hisoka’s victory allowed him that choice. I don’t agree, but it’s an interesting point to bring up in a shonen. It’s interesting, though morbid, and HxH does a lot of philosophizing like this, where most characters’ morals and actions are questionable, but the viewer understands where they come from. I think to create that cast and make them clash in the ways they do, especially to fit the genre, desensitization to death was necessary, but that idea’s place in HxH’s world is still interesting. I won’t say much more as to not allude to future events, but I think the tone of HxH is a crucial part of its identity. Love to see you commenting on it

If possible I’d love to see you finish this show. It’s one of my favorites, and so was FMAB, and your reactions to FMA have been my favorite reaction series I’ve seen. You pay such close attention and are very genuine, and your edits in post show a lot of care and time was put into these. I love learning things and seeing others’ opinions on the shows I love, and as someone who loves analysis but doesn’t pick up on a lot of subtler themes, symbols, etc, yours is always nice to see. Of course, if you’re unable or lose interest that’s valid, I just wanted to say how much I appreciate these series ❤️❤️

Yess the voice actor also voiced oikawa! And also to mention how hilarious it is when the initial pure interest in Hisoka turns into weirded out pure chills, and usually not the good kind 😂

Ahh yes, everyone's favorite child lover as the thumbnail still. Hehehe. For the record that's a joke. Hisoka is more like Goku, he's fightsexual. He just happens to want the "unripe" fruit. Yeeeah. It's still not a great look if we're being honest. Have you seen Baccono, Cast? Or any adaptations of Ryohgo Narita's work I was thinking about Gon today. He reminded me of a character in that show. A bit.

While I'm certainly not too sure if the clash in tone was intentional, I think there's a totally valid interpretation of it simply being the world as viewed through the characters we're following, who perhaps are somewhat desensitised or indifferent to the cruelty of the matter for all their various reasons. There are definitely plenty more in depth dives later down the line into morality and priorities and such, but naturally I can't say more than that.
  • 5:58 your comment on tone is exactly how I feel about this show, and I definitely think that's part of its charm, it's one reason why I'm enjoying it so much (I'm only in season 3 right now))
  • @Hellopeachiiiiy
9:47 nope 🤣 pretty sure he's in his late 20s. And yes! It is Oikawa's voice actor, Namikawa Daisuke

The line that really impressed you was the 2011 adaptation directly lying to you. If you read ch.1 of the manga or watch ep.1(1999) you learn the actual first time Gon experienced mortal fear. Even though it may not seem like it now, the chapter 1 events are key; the author WANTS you to know about Gon at age 9. The producers of the 2011 adaptation were clueless, favoring a shonen-boy happy-go-lucky tone over the author's actual intent.

A little suggestion, if you dont mind. When you put your text-commentary - i think it would be better to add some sound to it. Just a little quiet/soft *blim*, just to notify "hey, there's actually some text on the screen for a few seconds"
  • @julievdr
I’m not sure if it’s a reason for or a byproduct of the tone disparity, but I find the lighthearted nature makes the serious scenes hit even harder.
  • @FelixTheCat8
this 2011 version of HxH does reduce a little bit of the dark side they have, the manga or the 1999 version have more violence in them..
  • @Arma-S
Also what happened with chainsaw man?

Do you plan on watching the whole thing?
