Rishi Sunak is to resign as Conservative Party leader after a catastrophic election defeat to Labour.

The outgoing UK prime minister announced his resignation outside 10 Downing Street in London.

Sunak said he will not resign immediately – only when formal arrangements for a successor have taken place.

Labour won the UK general election in a landslide, with the Conservatives seeing their worst result – in terms of seats – in the party's history.

  • Its just over a year since Queen died and Charles is already on his 3rd prime minister like DAMN
  • The amount of prime ministers that didn't finish their term or weren't even voted in a row is so weird.

Here in Kenya 🇰🇪 we even invaded and occupied the Parliament, ate food that was meant for the MPs but the dude refused to step down The struggle continues.

In America it takes almost 3 months after election to handover power. In Britain, it takes just 1 day after the election to kick someone out of office. 😂

As a Chinese person, I'm amazed that a government official says sorry to people. I've never heard this in my country
  • @rickjet9080
Why is Rishi saying sorry when Boris, Penny, Liz just leave and don't say sorry. Looks Like Rishi has paid the price of picking their baggage up.

I feel a bit sorry for Rishi. Don’t let them put the last 14 years on him. He made some mistakes but the damage was done before he took over.

The sign language interpreter deserves an Oscar 🤣
  • To the Brits watching, DO NOT take this for granted, this graceful and peaceful transfer of power, that is.
  • Sorry but the sign language for what he's saying is hilarious, it's like he's mocking Sunak 😂

Well… I truly believe that if Rishi was a white charismatic middle age British man, you lot would have offered him a little bit more credit. Truth is you are blaming him for what the Conservative Party did before him. When he was appointed our economy was in tatters, he brought us back to right path (check the stats). You lot must be thrilled now that you will be governed by a labour government that most certainly will very ‘kindl’ assault your pockets, pursue and send away to other shores the so hatred rich people that ironically pay billions every year to your precious NHS, free motorways and so on and on. If this is you, then well done, change has arrived.

As much as the Brits jeer his resignation I am glad to see there are at least some western democracies where a peaceful transfer of power is still the expectation.

Rishi comes across as a good boy in the maddening circus of politics. Decent and well-read. In politics, you cannot satisfy everyone and voters' fatigue is a crucial element after 14 years in power. I wish you well, Rishi.
  • He gracefully accepted defeat, owned it himself, thanked the people and wished good luck to his rivals. Rishi Sunak is one of those rare gentleman politicians! Wishing him all the best

Honestly, I’m from America and I WISH concession speeches were this nice.
  • Signing interpreter is god damn AMAZING. If I won the lottery I’d hire him to just follow me around and interpret for me. Legend.
