VINTAGE Tyco Operating Hopper Ore Unloader Unboxing and Demonstration

Published 2022-06-26
In this video, I unbox a sealed Tyco Ore Unloader Trestle Set and demonstrate its function.

I've amassed quite the collection of Tyco operating hoppers over the years, but only recently got my hands on the unloader kit that goes with them. These hopper cars have movable doors on the bottom that allow you to use live loads (as opposed to fake plastic loads like most cars). This unloader is specially designed to empty the cars while still on the track.

Super. The ore dump car set was the only operating accessory that I ever bought for my railroad, and I still use it to this day. I have an operating sugar mill with a sugar beet dump, and the cars haul small brown beads that look like sugar beets, which are conveyed to a silo on a different part of the railroad for reloading. I have thirteen operating cars, eight Virginian, four Burlington, and one Holly Sugar, but I have not acquired any of the other two covered hopper sugar cars, or any of the other operating hoppers with different roadnames, like the DT&I. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N. P.S. Derailing Mantua/Tyco hoppers sometimes have adjustable gauge wheelsets, so check the gauge, and if a solid plastic wheelset, check for damage, like a broken flange or bent axle.

You can get lead weights that stick to the inside of the hopper and should make it heavy enough to where it won't derail. Metal wheels might help too.
